Important event information

Large crowds are expected to attend the annual Carols in the Domain festivities. Attendees are encouraged to catch public transport to and from the event with plenty of services within short walking distance. If you have to drive plan to arrive early and pre-book parking where possible as space is limited and traffic will be heavy.

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including trains, buses, ferries and light rail. There is also a Travel Cap of $2.80 on Sundays.

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Tallawong Station and Chatswood Station.

Metro services start from the early morning running every 10 minutes until late. Change at Epping to connect with train services to the city.

The closest stations to the Royal Botanic Gardens are Martin Place, St James and Circular Quay which are within walking distance of the Domain.

Trackwork

Trackwork is taking place from 02:00 Saturday 21 until 02:00 Monday 23 December and may affect how you travel to and from the event:

  • T2 Inner West & Leppington Line, T5 Cumberland Line: Buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville.
  • T3 Bankstown Line: On Saturday night and all day Sunday, buses replace trains between Campsie and Sydenham.  Trains run between Campsie and the City via Lidcombe, and between Leppington, Cabramatta and the City via Regents Park.

Trackwork is carried out on an ongoing basis to maintain the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Sydney Trains network. A number of regular route buses make stops along Elizabeth St at St James and Martin Place which is within walking distance of the Domain. Route 200 between Bondi Junction and Chatswood stops nearby on Macquarie St. Plan your trip by bus using the Trip Planner.

Getting there

Additional services will be running from the Hills District to QVB on the following routes:

  • Route 607X from Bella Vista at: 4:50pm, 5:10pm, 5:30pm, 5:50pm, 6:10pm and 6:30pm
  • Route 610X from Castle Hill at: 5:07pm, 5:22pm, 17:37pm, 17:52pm, 6:07pm, 6:22pm, 6:37pm and 6:52.

Getting home

Additional services will be running back to the Hills District from QVB York St Town Hall on the following routes:

  • Route 607X to Bella Vista at: 9:15pm, 9:45pm, 10:15pm, 10:45pm, 11:15pm and 11:45pm.
  • Route 610X to Castle Hill at: 9:02pm, 9:17pm, 9:32pm, 9:47pm, 10:02pm, 10:17pm, 10:32pm, 10:47pm and  11:02pm.

Services run regularly to Circular Quay and the wharves are within walking distance of the Domain.

Sydney Ferries services are very popular and may reach capacity, especially on weekends.

Light rail services run between Central Station and Dulwich Hill with stops at popular CBD and Inner West destinations. Change at Central and connect with a train to St James to get to the event.

Roads around the Domain including sections Art Gallery Rd, Mrs Macquaries Rd and College St will close to help with the movement of people after the event finishes.

Traffic will be heavy approaching the Domain especially on Macquarie St, College St, William St and Art Gallery Rd. If you are planning on driving, allow additional travel time and expect delays.

Taxi & vehicle drop off

There is a vehicle drop off zone on the corner of Hospital and Art Gallery Roads, with a direct walkway up Central Avenue leading to the Priority Access Viewing Area.

Parking in the area is limited and is expected to reach capacity early. Consider using public transport to get to the event.

A number of nearby car parks are available at a fee - it is recommended to book in early:

Limited metrered parking is avaliable on Mrs Maquaries Road, Hospital Road and Macquaire Sreet. Undercover parking is also avaliable at the Domain Car Park.

Parking

Carols in the Domain does not have dedicated accessible parking however there is a vehicle drop off zone on the corner of Hospital and Art Gallery Roads, with a direct walkway up Central Avenue leading to the Priority Access Viewing Area.

Transport
