Real-time train occupancy display comes to transport apps

You can now see how full your train, and each carriage, is before you board by using transport real-time apps.

Transport real-time apps will show which carriages have seats available, have standing room only or are completely full. This gives you more information so you can decide which carriage to take or whether to wait for another train.

Real-time capacity information is currently only available for Waratah (A set) trains. Waratah trains use weight sensors to calculate the number of passengers on board and updates the status each time the train doors close.

Waratah trains currently service 54% of all trips on the Sydney Trains network and run on the following lines:

T1 North Shore, Northern & Western Line
T2 Inner West & Leppington Line
T3 Bankstown Line
T5 Cumberland Line
T7 Olympic Park Line (weekends only)
T8 Airport & South Line

Transport apps that now display real-time train occupancy include Transport for NSW’s Trip Planner, Opal Travel app and Facebook Messenger chatbot RITA. Other transport apps with real-time train occupancy information include NextThere, TripView, AnyTrip and TripGo

Transport apps have been displaying bus capacity since 2016.
