Summer holiday transport

During summer holidays, especially over Christmas and New Year, trains, buses, ferries and light rail may not run as usual. However, there will still be plenty of services to cater for everyone’s needs. Please make sure to plan your trip before you travel.

Summer timetables summary

  • Sydney and Intercity trains will run a changed timetable over the summer holiday period. Plan your trip for the latest travel information.
  • Trackwork may affect your travel over the holiday period. Please check travel alerts and trackwork before you travel.
  • Station Link services will run to a holiday timetable from Monday 24 December 2018 to Sunday 6 January 2019.
    • Only SL1 services from Chatswood and Epping will run during this time - there will be no Station Link services from St Leonards, Beecroft and Eastwood.
    • Additional SL1 services will be provided to keep you moving across the holiday period.

  • Sydney Harbour is always busy over the summer, plan your trip in advance and allow extra travel time.
  • Rydalmere Wharf is temporarily closed. The Route 535 will be the alternative service with a shuttle bus running between Parramatta Wharf, Rydalmere Wharf and Sydney Olympic Park Wharf.
  • Garden Island Wharf is closed Monday to Saturday.

  • Between 2am and 4am services will run between Central and Dulwich Hill
  • From 4am New Years Day, normal overnight services will run between Central and The Star every 30 minutes until 6am

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including trains, buses, ferries and light rail. You can enjoy a Travel Cap of $2.70 on Sundays.

More ways to pay

If you have an American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card which displays the contactless payment symbol, or linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and off at Opal card readers on trains, light rail and Sydney Ferries. Standard (peak) Adult Opal fare pricing applies. If you consistently use the same contactless card or linked device to tap on and tap off, you may qualify for Opal daily, weekly and Sunday fare caps but no other Opal benefits apply.
