Ahead of the opening of Sydney Metro Northwest in 2019, the Epping to Chatswood train line requires upgrading to metro standards.
Therefore, from 30 September, Macquarie University, Macquarie Park and North Ryde stations will close for around seven months for these upgrades to be completed. In the meantime, Station Link, a new high frequency bus service, will temporarily replace train services and will operate from station to station on seven different routes.
Key features of Station Link include:
- High frequency, turn-up-and-go services to stations between Epping and Chatswood at least every six minutes during the peak.
- More than 110 services per hour in the busiest parts of the day.
- Direct peak services to and from St Leonards, Beecroft and Eastwood.
- A dedicated high frequency service to Macquarie University Campus from Epping Station during university semesters.
- A loop service running at least every 10 minutes 7 days a week to all stations between Epping to Chatswood.
- Station Link bus services are available on the Trip Planner, and on real time apps.
The station upgrades at Epping, Macquarie University, Macquarie Park, North Ryde and Chatswood include the application of screen doors along the full length of the metro platforms. These doors will work to keep people and objects like prams away from the tracks, improving customer safety and allowing trains to get in and out of stations much faster.
The upgrades will allow for a greater frequency of services when the Sydney Metro Northwest opens, with metro trains expected to run every 4 minutes during peak times.
Train services that previously ran between Hornsby and the City via Macquarie Park and North Shore Line, stopping at all stations, will be replaced by limited stops services towards the City via Strathfield on the T1 Northern Line in addition to the Station Link replacement buses.
These services will start or end at Central during peak times. If you travel from Normanhurst, Thornleigh, Pennant Hills, Beecroft and Cheltenham stations to Town Hall, Wynyard or North Shore stations then you will need to change trains at Central during peak times to reach your destination.
At all other times of the day, trains via Strathfield and Central will continue on to Wynyard, Town Hall and North Shore stations and you will not need to change to reach these stations.
Additional services will also be available on the T1 North Shore Line between the City and stations north of Chatswood during peak times with around 40 trains per hour from Central to the City Circle and/or North Shore.
All Station Link bus services are air-conditioned and fully accessible with low floors, on board information displays and audio announcements (with hearing loops).
You will not be able to take your bicycle onboard Station Link buses as they are difficult to stow without inconveniencing or potentially endangering other passengers.
If possible you might like to consider whether walking or cycling to work sometimes would be a more efficient way of travelling that could save you time, money, improve your health and benefit the environment.
The Macquarie Park precinct and surrounding road network currently experiences traffic congestion, particularly during peak periods. We are working closely with the community, businesses and local government to address congestion with targeted travel demand strategies aimed at reducing vehicle numbers during peak times.
Upgraded roads and intersections now include bus priority measures to provide more efficient and reliable travel times through the Macquarie Park precinct for bus services.
No additional parking will be provided in the affected areas during the upgrade. Existing parking will be managed and reallocated as required to improve capacity during the upgrade.
The Transport Management Centre will continue to proactively manage the network to optimise the flow of traffic during this temporary disruption.
Sydney Metro Northwest is Australia’s biggest public transport project – 31 metro stations and 66km of new metro rail.
Services start in the second quarter of 2019 with a new metro train every four minutes in the peak in Sydney’s North West.
From 2024, metro rail will be extended from the North West, under Sydney Harbour, through new underground CBD stations and beyond to Bankstown.
