Plan your trip to school

Learn how to plan your school trip and travel safely on public transport in NSW

Need to apply for free or subsidised travel? Go to the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) page.

Need to know your operator? Read the guides on this page.

Plan a school trip using school buses

Use the Trip Planner to find school bus services to and from your school. You can confirm your route number, stop location, and departure time.

Note:

  • All public buses across NSW have real-time information available
  • Not all schools have dedicated school bus services.
  • Regional coach services are excluded.

Find a school bus operator

Before applying for a School Opal card or travel pass, you’ll need to know:

  • the transport mode(s) you'll use (e.g. bus, ferry)
  • which operator runs your school service.
  • your school and home address.

The form must be completed in one session – it cannot be saved and resumed.

How to find your school bus operator

If you’re not sure which operator runs your school bus service, you can:

  • Check the operator map: Sydney operator map (PDF, 2.2MB)
  • See a list of school bus operators in Greater and Outer Metro Sydney (below)
  • Contact your school: Your school can also provide details about your bus operator.
  • Use the Trip Planner: Search for your school and home address, filter results to show only school buses, and expand a trip result to see the “Operated by” label showing the operator’s name.
  • Contact a school bus operator: Use the Operator search tool to search by operator name or area, and filter by mode (tick School bus) and region

Concession travel outside school

When travelling outside of school hours:

  • Children aged 4 to 15 can travel on a concession fare
  • Students aged 16 and over can carry a proof of entitlement card to receive concession fares
