How to use the Trip Planner

Plan your trip, compare transport options, filter results, and book services—all in one easy tool.

Get started

Follow these steps to plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

1
Enter your destination

Start by entering where you want to go. You can type a stop, place, or address in the search bar, or select a location on the map.

For example:

  • Stop, station or wharf (e.g. Parramatta Station)
  • Place or point of interest (e.g. Sydney Opera House)
  • Street, suburb or address

If you enter a stop

You’ll see a live departure board. From here, you can:

  • View upcoming departures
  • Add a destination stop to see services between two stops.
  • Open the Trip Planner with this stop as your destination.

You can only search for stops on the same route or line as your selected stop (for example, the T1 line from Chatswood doesn't connect to Bondi Junction).

If you enter a place or address

The Trip Planner opens automatically.

Trip Planner search screen shows results for the term “central,” including Central Station in Sydney, Adelaide Central Bus Station, Davistown Central RSL Wharf, and Central Cct in Orange.

2
Choose your origin

Use your current location, enter an address, or select a point on the map.

Trip Planner screen shows Central Station, Sydney selected as the starting point.

3
Set date and time

By default, trips leaving now are shown. Select Leaving now to change to:

  • Leave at
  • Arrive by

Note: You cannot select a date in the past.

Trip Planner date and time screen shows options to travel now, leave at a selected time, or arrive by a selected time, with day, hour and minute selectors.

4
View your trip options

Your trip results load automatically with real-time information, including:

  • Suggested routes
  • Departure and arrival times
  • Transfers or walking information

Trip Planner search screen shows results for a trip from Central Station to Hornsby Station.

Customise your trip

Save your favourite trips

The Trip Planner saves your recent trips and lets you pin favourites for quick access.

Tip: Save your regular trip by setting your home address as the destination and your current location as the starting point. Then favourite that trip for quick access.

Get to and from public transport

Choose how you connect with public transport: walk, cycle or drive.

You can also set your preferred connection time. For example:

  • 20-minute bike ride to a train station
  • 15-minute walk to your destination

These options can be reversed for your return trip.

Trip Planner screen shows options for getting to and from public transport by walking, cycling or driving.

Compare travel options

By default, the results shows public transport. You can also compare:

  • Walking
  • Bike riding
  • Driving

Each option shows:

  • Travel time
  • Distance
  • Suggested route
  • Step-by-step directions

Tip: Use Getting to/from public transport filters to set how far you're willing to walk, bike ride or drive to connect with public transport.

Bookable or private services

Some services require booking or have different payment systems.

These may include:

  • NSW TrainLink Regional services (marked Booking required)
  • On Demand services
  • Private buses or ferries

Note:

  • You may need to book or pay outside the Opal system.
  • Prices may differ from standard Opal fares.
  • If OpalPay is accepted, it will appear in your results.

Show Opal-only trips

To see only trips that accept Opal or contactless payments:

  1. Select Filter to edit your trip preferences
  2. Under Service options, untick Other bookable services
  3. Click Apply

This filters out non-Opal and bookable services and shows estimated Opal fares when available.
