Getting Sydney back on track

The biggest coordinated program of rail maintenance ever undertaken in Sydney has begun.

Sydney Trains has created the Rail Repair Plan, an accelerated maintenance program that will take place over the next year or more to build a more reliable and resilient train network.

We’ve done our best to minimise impacts to passengers, focusing our maintenance work outside of peak times, predominantly on weekends, and staggering it across different lines on different weekends so trains can still run. We recognise some disruption is inevitable.

How to keep updated

The Sydney Rail Repair Plan has been prepared in response to the recent recommendations made by the expert panel conducting the Sydney Trains Review.

The primary recommendation was to focus on clearing the extensive maintenance backlog across the network, reduce equipment failures and restore reliability.

Sydney Trains has now created the Rail Repair Plan, an accelerated maintenance program that will take place over the next year or more to build a more reliable and resilient train network.

Maintenance work is being prioritised during existing trackwork windows such as on weekends, weeknights, during school holidays or during off peak on a weekday when fewer people are catching trains.

We work closely with our event planning team to ensure there will be transport options to get you where you need to go.

If you’re using the rail network on weekends, please plan ahead using tools such the Trip Planner, the Opal Travel app and check travel alerts or subscribe to the trackwork alert email to keep up-to-date with the latest changes.

  • Trains may run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern due to trackwork between Strathfield and Central.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July

  • Penrith trains run to a changed timetable and make extra stops at Homebush, Burwood, Croydon and Ashfield.
  • Richmond trains run to a changed timetable between Richmond and Olympic Park. Change trains at Parramatta to continue your journey towards the City.
     
  • Saturday from 9pm to 2am, trains from Penrith run to the City via Bankstown, to a changed timetable.
  • Trains from the City to Penrith continue to run via Strathfield.
  • Buses replace trains from Strathfield to Central, in that direction only.

Monday 15 to Thursday 18 July

  • Monday and Tuesday, nightly from 9.40pm to 1.30am, buses replace trains between Leppington and Granville.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Granville and the City.
     
  • Wednesday and Thursday, nightly from 9.50pm to 1.30am, buses replace trains between Leppington and Fairfield.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Fairfield and the City via Granville.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July  

  • Inner West trains will not run. T1 Western and T9 Northern Line trains make extra stops at some stations between Homebush and Central.
  • Leppington trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Strathfield via Granville, making an extra stop at Homebush.
  • You may need to change trains to continue your journey.
     
  • Saturday from 9pm to 2am, express buses replace trains from Strathfield to Central, in that direction only.
  • All-stations buses replace trains from Ashfield to Central. T9 Northern Line trains run between Strathfield and Ashfield.
  • All-stations and limited stop trains continue to run from the City to Strathfield, in that direction only.

  • Nightly from 9.50pm to 1.30am, buses replace trains between Liverpool and Villawood.
  • Trains run between Villawood and the City, some to a changed timetable.    
  • Buses also replace T2 Leppington Line trains between Leppington and Fairfield or Granville.

  • Trains may run to a changed timetable.

Saturday 20 July   

  • From 4am to 11.30am, buses replace trains between Waterfall and Sutherland.
  • Trains run between Cronulla, Sutherland and Bondi Junction, some to a changed timetable.

Monday 15 to Thursday 18 July  

  • Monday and Tuesday, nightly from 9.40pm to 1.30am, buses replace trains between Leppington and Granville.

  • Trains run to a changed timetable and make extra stops at all stations between Ashfield and Macdonaldtown.
     
  • Saturday from 9pm to 2am, buses replace trains from Ashfield to Central, in that direction only.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Hornsby and Ashfield.
  • Change at Strathfield for express buses to Central or change at Ashfield for buses stopping all-stations towards Central.
  • Trains continue to run from the City to Hornsby via Strathfield, in that direction only.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July

  • Trains may run to a changed timetable due to trackwork between Strathfield and Central.
     
  • Saturday from 9pm to 2am, most trains run between Blue Mountains Line stations and Parramatta only. Change trains to continue your journey.
  • Trackwork between Strathfield and Central may also affect how you travel.
     
  • The 22:19 Mount Victoria to Central service will run to a changed timetable via Bankstown.
  • The 00:18 Central to Lithgow service will leave Central at 00:28 and run via Strathfield.

Monday 15 to Thursday 18 July

  • Nightly from 9.50pm to 3am, trains run to a changed timetable via the T1 North Shore Line, making extra stops at Gordon, Chatswood, then all stations to Central.
  • Buses run between Strathfield and Hornsby to connect with Central Coast & Newcastle Line trains.
  • Some trains towards Newcastle Interchange run up to 30 minutes later than the normal timetable.
     
  • Tuesday to Friday, buses replace the 1.47am Central to Newcastle Interchange service from Central to Hornsby.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July  

  • Trains may run to a changed timetable due to trackwork between Strathfield and Central.
     
  • Saturday from 9pm to 2am, trains run between Central Coast & Newcastle Line stations and Strathfield only.
  • Buses replace trains from Strathfield to Central, in that direction only.
  • Trains continue to run from Central to Strathfield, in that direction only. Change at Strathfield to continue your journey.

Thursday 18 July  

  • From 8.45am to 11.15am, buses replace trains between Muswellbrook and Maitland.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July  

  • Saturday from 3am to 11am, buses replace trains between Dapto, Port Kembla and Sutherland.
  • You may need to change buses to continue your journey.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Bomaderry, Kiama and Dapto, and T4 Illawarra trains run between Sutherland and Bondi Junction.
     
  • Sunday from 2.30am to 9.50am, buses replace trains between Bomaderry and Wollongong.
  • You may need to change buses to continue your journey.
  • Trains run between Port Kembla, Wollongong and Bondi Junction, some to a changed timetable.
  • The 02:39 Kiama to Bondi Junction service will run up to 14 minutes earlier than the normal timetable from Kiama to Coniston, then run to the normal timetable from Wollongong to Bondi Junction.

  • Trains run in one direction only, from Central first stop Museum.
  • Some trains may start or end at Central, run to a changed timetable or leave from different platforms.
  • You may need to change trains to continue your journey.
  • The light rail runs in both directions between Circular Quay and Central.

Monday 22 to Thursday 25 July

  • Nightly from 10pm to 1.30am, trains may run to a changed timetable due to trackwork between Strathfield and Central.

Friday 26 July    

  • From 10.30pm, buses replace trains between Gordon and Wynyard.
  • Trains run between Hornsby and Gordon, some to a changed timetable.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July    

  • Buses replace trains between Hornsby and Wynyard.
  • T9 trains run between Berowra or Hornsby and Central, platforms 1-12, via Strathfield.
  • Trackwork also affects trains on the City Circle. From Wynyard, trains run towards Town Hall and Central only.
  • The light rail runs in both directions between Circular Quay, Wynyard and Central.

Monday 22 to Thursday 25 July  

  • Nightly from 10pm to 1.30am, trains run to a changed timetable and make extra stops at some stations between Ashfield and Macdonaldtown.

Friday 26 to Sunday 28 July  

  • From 10.30pm Friday, trains run between Penrith and Central, platforms 1-12, only.
     
  • Saturday and Sunday, Richmond trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern between Richmond and Olympic Park only.

  • Nightly from 10pm to 1.30am, Inner West trains will not run. Leppington, T1 Western and T9 Northern Line trains run to a changed timetable and make extra stops at some stations between Homebush and Macdonaldtown.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July    

  • Saturday from 6.30am to 10.30am, buses replace Inner West trains between Ashfield and Central.
  • Leppington trains make extra stops at Homebush and Croydon.
     
  • Sunday from 5.20am to 9.40am, buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and the City via Regents Park.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July

  • Trains run between Liverpool or Lidcombe and Redfern only, some to a changed timetable.
  • Change trains at Redfern to continue your journey.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July

  • Daily from 6.30am to 12.15pm, some trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern.
  • Some trains start or end at Hurstville or Sutherland. You may need to change trains to continue your journey.
  • Trains may leave from different platforms, please check indicator screens before boarding.
     
  • Sunday from 1pm to 4pm, trains will not stop at Wolli Creek, but make an extra stop at Arncliffe.
  • Buses run between Sydenham, Wolli Creek and Arncliffe.
  • Change at Arncliffe or Sydenham for a bus to Wolli Creek.
  • T8 Airport & South Line trains to and from the City continue to stop at Wolli Creek.

Sunday 28 July

  • From 5.20am to 10.30am, buses replace trains between Cabramatta and Granville.
  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and the City via Regents Park, and between Richmond or Schofields and Olympic Park.
  • You may need to change trains at Lidcombe to continue your journey.
     
  • From 10.30am to 11.30am, trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and the City via Granville, and between Schofields and Olympic Park.
  • You may need to change trains at Granville to continue your journey.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July

  • Extra trains run between Olympic Park and Richmond.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July

  • Trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern. You may need to change trains to continue your journey.
  • Revesby trains run between Revesby and Central only.
  • Most Macarthur trains from the City run via Sydenham. Trains to the City run via the Airport.
  • Early morning and late evening trains run via the Airport but start and end at Central, platform 23.

Friday 26 July

  • From 10.30pm, trains run between Hornsby and Central, platforms 1-12, only.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July    

  • Trains run to a changed timetable between Berowra or Hornsby and Central, platforms 1-12, only.

Monday 22 to Thursday 25 July

  • Nightly from 10pm to 2.30am, trains may run to a changed timetable due to trackwork between Strathfield and Central.
