Ticket options

  • Children aged 3 and under travel free on public transport.
  • Children aged 4 to 15 years are entitled to concession fares with the Child/Youth Opal card. No proof is needed, but you can get a Transport Concession Entitlement Card to confirm your age.
  • Full-time students aged 16 years and older need a Transport Concession Entitlement Card to pay concession fares.
  • Primary and secondary students in NSW may also be entitled to free or subsidised travel to and from school.

Apply for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card

To be eligible, you must be either:

  • Enrolled in a NSW or ACT secondary school or non-government secondary school.
  • Registered as a full-time home-schooled or distance education student with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).
  • An international school student who meets the criteria.

Get a Child/Youth Opal card

Child/Youth Opal cards are for:

  • children aged 4-15, or
  • full-time students (aged 16 years and older) holding a Transport Concession Entitlement Card.

Note: If you're 16 years or older with a Child/Youth Opal card, you must carry your Transport Concession Entitlement Card to avoid fines.

You can order a Child/Youth Opal card online, or get one over the counter from retailers or at a Service NSW centre.

Regional NSW

Regional trains and coaches

Children aged 4-15 and and secondary school students with NSW or Victorian school ID cards receive discounted fares on NSW TrainLink Regional trains and coaches. Find out more about child and family fares.

Local services in rural and regional NSW

Privately owned rural and regional NSW services may offer concessions to children and students. Check with your local transport operator before you travel.
