Depending on which card you need, there are various ways to get an Opal card.
Adult and Child/Youth Opal cards are available over the counter from Opal retailers, including convenience stores and newsagents. Concession cards must be applied for online.

You can also use a contactless payment such as a credit/debit card or linked device to tap on as an alternative to an Adult Opal card.

For children aged 4-15 and full-time NSW/ACT high school students aged 16 and older who have a senior secondary student card issued by their school.

Concession Opal cards must be ordered online. You need to provide your proof of concession entitlement when you apply and allow 7-10 days for the card to be posted to you.
If you’re eligible for concession fares you can open a Transport Connect account online, link your concession and discover more ways to pay with your credit or debit card, phone or watch. It’s faster, easier and you get the exact same fares and benefits as an Opal card.

Most senior/pensioner fares* can choose between an Opal card or Contactless Payments to access their discounted fares.
If you’re eligible for senior/pensioner fares you can open a Transport Connect account online, link your concession and discover more ways to pay with your credit or debit card, phone or watch. It’s faster, easier and you get the exact same fares and benefits as an Opal card.
* Some concession types cannot use Contactless Concessions and must apply for an Opal card for discounted travel, including Free Travel Opal card holders, asylum seekers and Department of Veterans Affairs concession holders, and seniors cards issued outside NSW and ACT.

Free travel Opal cards allow convenient access at metro, train stations, and ferry wharves without staff. The free travel card is not mandatory, but you must always carry your proof of entitlement card with you for free travel.
