Transfer balance and block card
Report a lost or stolen Opal card to block it and protect your account, transfer the balance to another Opal card.
If your registered Opal card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can transfer the balance to another Opal card. Both Opal cards must be active and registered to the same Opal account.
Note: You cannot transfer balances from unregistered Opal cards. Register your card now
How to transfer your Opal card balance online
Follow these steps to transfer your balance to another Opal card registered to your account. Once completed, the original card will be permanently blocked.
- Log in to your Opal account.
- Select the Opal card you wish to block and transfer its balance.
- Select the ‘Manage’ tab.
- Select ‘Transfer balance of this Opal card’.
- Follow the prompts to transfer the balance to another Opal card linked to your account.
What you need to know
- Balance transfers may take up to 24 hours to process.
- After 24 hours, you will need to tap on at an Opal reader within 60 days to complete the transfer.
- Transfers must be collected by tapping on an Opal reader within 60 days, or you’ll need to contact Opal Customer Care.
- Opal cards have a maximum balance limit:
- Adult and Senior/Pensioner: $250
- Concession and Child/Youth: $150
Any auto top-up set on your original Opal card will transfer to your new card. If you don't want to transfer it, disable the auto top-up from the 'Top up' tab in your account before the balance transfer.
Get a new Opal card and transfer balance
If you need a new Opal card, you have several options:
- Adult or Child/Youth Opal card: Visit any Opal retailer to get a new card and link it to your account online.
- Gold Senior/Pensioner or Concession Opal card: Order a new card online and transfer balance.
Important information:
- Gold Senior/Pensioner or Concession Opal cardholders can order a new card during the transfer process.
New cards take 5 - 7 business days to arrive. Use an Adult Opal card or make a contactless payment for an Adult fare in the meantime.
If you don't have another Opal card
If you don't have another Opal card linked to the same account, you can only block the lost, stolen or damaged card. Once you have a new Opal card, contact Opal Customer Care to transfer the balance.

Transfer balance from a blocked card
If your Opal card is already blocked, contact Opal Customer Care to transfer the balance to another linked Opal card.
