Newcastle fare free zone

Newcastle Transport operate buses through a Fare Free Bus Zone in the city centre of Newcastle between 7.30am and 6.00pm, seven days per week.

The Fare Free Zone extends from Selma Street in the west, north to the Tree of Knowledge corner (Hannell Street Wickham) and east to the beaches along King Street. From there it loops south into Darby Street, along Bull Street and then back to King Street.

Normal fares apply outside the specified hours and the Fare Free Zone.

You do not have to tap on and off with your Opal card when you are travelling within the boundaries of the Fare Free Zone.

You do have to tap on and off with your Opal card for the following:

  • Your journey starts outside of the Fare Free Zone and you complete your journey outside of the zone.
  • Your journey starts in the Fare Free Zone and you complete your journey outside the zone.
  • Your journey starts outside the Fare Free Zone and you complete your journey within the zone.
