Ways to pay

There are a range of options to pay for your travel on public transport, including credit/debit cards, digital wallets, and Opal cards. Simply tap on at the start and tap off at the end of your trip.

Opal card

Adult, Child, Concession and Senior/Pensioner fares

Opal cards are smartcard tickets that can be used to pay for travel. If you hold a Concession, Child/Youth or Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card, you will pay reduced fares.

Use a credit, debit card or linked device

Adult fares and benefits apply

You can pay for your fare by using your credit/debit card with the contactless symbol or a digital wallet, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay.

Buy an Opal single ticket (back-up option)

Adult and Child single ticket fares

If you don't have an Opal card or contactless payment option, you must purchase an Opal single trip ticket to travel. Opal single tickets are only available for metro, train, ferry and light rail.

Fares and benefits

The amount you pay depends on where, when and how you travel and any Opal benefits that apply, such as: 

  • A $2 transfer discount for Adult fares ($1 discount for Child and Concession fares) for every transfer between modes as part of one journey.
  • A 30% discount on fares for off peak travel.

Adults

Travel as much as you want within the Opal network and you never pay more than:

  • $18.70 a day (Mondays to Thursdays),
  • $9.35 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
  • $50 a week

Travel as much as you want within the Opal network and you never pay more than:

  • $9.35 a day (Monday to Thursdays)
  • $4.65 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays
  • $25 a week

Travel as much as you want within the Opal network and you never pay more than:

  • $2.50 a day 
  • $17.50 a week
