Opal digital card trial

The Opal digital card trial is ending, and from Sunday 12 December 2021 you will no longer be able to use your Opal digital card to pay for travel. We appreciate your participation in the trial.

About the Opal digital card trial

The Opal digital card trial launched in December 2020, and is a 12-month program allowing registered participants to pay for travel on public transport using their mobile device.

On Sunday 12 December 2021 the Opal digital card trial will end.

This means from Sunday 12 December 2021 the Opal digital card will no longer appear in your digital wallet, and users will not be able to:

  • Tap on and tap off on public transport using their Opal digital card
  • Top-up their Opal digital card
  • Use the Opal digital card app

The trial has been a great success, providing insight into the customer benefits and convenience of a digital Opal card, customer payment preferences and use of our transport network. These insights will be used to shape the future experience for people travelling on the transport network.

When the trial ends

On Sunday 12 December 2021 your Opal digital card will no longer be visible in your digital wallet. No further action is required from you.

After Sunday 12 December 2021, we will refund any outstanding balance to your linked payment method within 10 business days. We will contact you if we need any further information from you when processing your refund.

It’s important that you make alternative arrangements to pay for your travel before the Opal digital card closure date on Sunday 12 December 2021.

The easiest and most convenient way for adult customers to pay for their travel on public transport is with contactless payments. If you have an American Express, Mastercard or Visa credit or debit card or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal readers.

Alternatively, you can pay for your travel on public transport using an Opal card.

Fares on the Opal digital trial were in line with standard adult Opal fares. Whether you choose a physical Opal card or use contactless (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), you will be charged the same fare. See Fares and payments for more information about your travel and ticket options.

You will not be able to transfer your Opal digital card balance to another Opal card. The Opal digital card is considered a separate product and existed only for the purpose of the 12-month trial. We will automatically close your Opal digital card account on 12 December 2021 and refund any outstanding balance to you within 10 business days.

Auto top ups

Until the end of the trial your balance will be topped up automatically when your account falls below $10.

From Sunday 12 December 2021 your balance will no longer be topped up. We will refund any outstanding balance to your linked payment method within 10 business days of the trial closure.

From Sunday 12 December 2021 you will no longer be able to use the Opal digital app to view your account and travel history. You will still be able to access your trip history by logging in to your Opal Connect account.

You can remove the Opal digital app from your device at any time.

If you get a new phone or device you can still transfer your Opal digital card to a new phone or device up until the trial closes on Sunday 12 December 2021.

You will still be able to access your trip history by logging in to your Opal Connect account.

You don’t need to take any action. We will automatically close your Opal digital card account from Sunday 12 December 2021 and refund any outstanding balance to your linked payment method within 10 business days.
