NSW TrainLink fare rules
Understand the conditions and entitlements for fares booked on NSW TrainLink Regional services.
Cancellation policy
- Bookings cancelled more than seven days prior to departure will receive a full refund.
- Bookings cancelled or changed within seven days of departure will incur a cancellation or re-booking fee of $5.50.
Note: All cancellation and re-booking transactions are subject to the NSW TrainLink cancellation and re-booking fee policy.
Fare rules
- Adult fares: For passengers aged 16 years and over who are not eligible for concession fares.
- Seasonal pricing: Peak, Standard and special discounts may apply and will be automatically applied at the time of booking.
Child fares
- Child (4-15 years) and eligible school students: Entitlement is half the Peak Adult fare.
- Child $1 Fare (NSW TrainLink offer): This fare is applicable when travelling with one or more adults (Peak or Standard fare) from the same household, with a maximum of four children in any group. Additional children are charged at the applicable Child fare. Not available for travel in sleeping berths, Sydney Trains, or NSW TrainLink Intercity services.
- Infants aged 3 and under: Travel free of charge, but must occupy a reserved seat and be accompanied by a parent or guardian (Adult) aged 16 years or older.
Who qualifies:
- Children aged 4-15 years.
- Customers in possession of a valid Transport Concession Entitlement Card aged 16, 17 and 18 years or Victorian secondary school students aged 17 to 18 years inclusive in possession of a 'Victorian Public Transport Concession Card' endorsed 'S'.
Conditions
- Children under 12 are not permitted to travel alone and must be accompanied by an adult aged 16 years or older, except where they are accompanied by a parent under the age of 16.
- When travelling with an Adult, a Child must sit in the adjacent seat to the accompanying Adult.
- Children and infants must occupy a reserved seat next to the accompanying Adult. They are not to be seated on another customer’s lap.
- One free infant seat per Adult customer is allowed.
- If additional seats are required for more infants than the number of Adults, a Child fare must be paid for each additional seat.
Concessions and entitlements
- Discounted fares are available for eligible groups, with up to 50% off the Peak Adult fare.
Proof of eligibility requirements
- You must present your proof of entitlement at the time of booking and also carry this with you when you travel. Fines apply if travelling without a valid concession card.
- NSW TrainLink will not allow concession fares bookings or travel with an expired concession card.
- Conditions: Discounts do not apply to sleeping berths or extra charges (e.g. pre-booked luggage for over-sized items).
- Fares: Eligible students pay half of the Peak Adult fare.
- Eligibility: Available to full time NSW University students, TAFE students and Trainees and apprentices
- You must have either:
- a valid Transport Concession Entitlement Card OR
- a Victorian Student Concession Card. (Victorian cardholders can only use the Student Fare for travel between Albury, Wangaratta, Benalla, Seymour, Broadmeadows, and Melbourne).
International students
- Only international students funded by specified Australian Government scholarships are eligible for concession fares.
- International students on an Australian Awards Scholarship, or an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship, are also eligible.
Conditions
- Not valid for travel in sleeping berths.
Note: Students who do not meet the eligibility criteria may still be able to access a tertiary Study Fare (see Study fare).
- Fares: Eligible seniors pay half the Peak Adult fare.
- Eligibility: Available to Australian seniors with a valid Seniors Card issued by an Australian state or territory government. (Note: Overseas seniors are not entitled to concessions.)
Conditions
- Not available for Online Saver fares or Online booking discount.
Concession entitlement:
Country Pensioner Excursions (CPE) ticket Allows booking of an Economy class seat on a NSW TrainLink Regional train service for $2.50.
- Fares: Eligible pensioners pay half the Peak Adult fare.
- Eligibility: Available to Australian residents with a valid Pensioner Concession Card from Centrelink or the Department of Veterans' Affairs (electronic or physical). (Note: Overseas pensioners are not entitled to concessions.)
Conditions
- Not available for Online Saver fares or Online booking discounts.
Concession entitlements:
- Country Pensioner Excursion (CPE) ticket (available to pensioners residing within NSW/VIC/ACT). Allows booking of an Economy class seat on a NSW TrainLink Regional train service for $2.50.
- Four single or two return trips within NSW annually with Pensioner Travel Vouchers (available to pensioners residing in NSW/ACT).
- Fares: Eligible Centrelink customers pay half the Peak Adult fare for trips within NSW.
- Eligibility: Available to customers in possession of a valid Transport Concession Entitlement Card. Find out more.
Conditions
- Entitlement is not applied to Online Saver fares or Online booking discount.
- Not available for travel on Family fares.
- No concessions on an interstate journey or any portion of an interstate journey.
If you hold a DVA Veteran Gold Card, you are entitled to:
- Country Pensioner Excursion (CPE) ticket: Allows booking of an Economy class seat on a NSW TrainLink Regional train service for $2.50.
- Half-fare concession on all NSW TrainLink services.
- Four single or two return trips within NSW annually with Pensioner Travel Vouchers for Veteran Gold Cards marked ‘war widow’ only.
Eligibility
- Available to NSW customers with a DVA Veteran Gold Card. Find out more.
Conditions
- Entitlement is not applied to Online Saver fares or Online booking discount.
- Not available for travel on Family fares.
- When travelling interstate, you must pay the applicable fare from the NSW border to your destination.
Ex-Member of the Defence Forces with a disability
If you hold a valid Transport Concession Entitlement Card for Ex Member of the Defence Forces and reside outside the Sydney and Newcastle suburban areas, you are entitled to:
- Three return or six single in first or economy class NSW TrainLink journeys each calendar year within NSW or the portion of an interstate journey.
Eligibility
- Available to customers in possession of a valid Transport Concession Entitlement Card for Ex Member of the Defence Forces. Find out more.
Conditions
- When travelling interstate, the applicable fare from the NSW border to the interstate destination is to be paid. Operators will be required to calculate the fare to be collected.
- Veterans Affairs White cards cannot be used to purchase tickets at the concession rate.
Eligibility
- Available to customers in possession of a Companion Card. Find out more.
Entitlement
- The Companion Card allows a carer or companion to travel for free on NSW TrainLink Regional services when travelling with the cardholder.
Companion Card holder
- You pay your normal fare based on your concession status. You can use any other valid concession card (such as seniors, a Pensioner Concession Card (PCC), CPE, or Student cards) along with your Companion Card.
- You must carry your Companion Card as proof of entitlement and show it to public transport staff for free travel.
- You and your companion must travel together.
- Only one companion can travel with you for free at any time.
Berths
- If you book a berth, you must also pay the applicable berth charges for you and your companion.
Conditions
- This entitlement does not apply to Online Saver fares, Online booking discounts or Family fares.
Exclusive NSW TrainLink offers and entitlements
Who qualifies
- Child $1 fare is available to children aged 15 years and under and entitles travel anywhere on the NSW TrainLink Regional network for $1 each way.
- Each child must travel with one or two full Adult (Peak or Standard fare) paying customers from the same household (such as parents, grandparents, or guardians).
- Up to four children in any group can travel at this fare.
- Seats for additional children are charged at the applicable Child fare.
Conditions
- Not available for travel in sleeping berths.
- Not available for travel on Sydney Trains or NSW TrainLink Intercity services.
- Not available to groups in which all adults are travelling on concession or employee passes in conjunction with other promotions or travel passes.
Who qualifies
- Family fares apply to one or more adults travelling with two or more children.
- The first two children will pay a Child fare, and any additional children will travel free of charge.
- Adults may travel on a Standard or Peak Adult fare, or use a valid concession card or Pensioner Travel Voucher.
Conditions
- Customers travelling on family fares must travel on the same service and route together.
- Adults and children must be from the same household, and seats need to be booked for each traveller. They must travel together as one group for the exact same journey.
Fares entitlement
- 15% discount off the Seasonal Adult fare on all NSW TrainLink services.
Who qualifies:
Available to:
- Australian and international students undertaking tertiary education.
You must have:
- Identification that includes:
- Name of the educational facility
- Student’s name
- Student number
- A second form of identification with a photo (e.g., driver's licence or passport) must be presented at the time of booking and carried when travelling.
Conditions
- Not available for the family fare scheme.
- You must carry a valid proof of entitlement.
- If booking online, enter your concession card number as a whole number without dashes or spaces in the ID field.
- NSW TrainLink discounts the price of tickets by up to 30% during off-peak seasons. The ordinary adult fare is classed as the adult fare without seasonal discounts.
- Concessions are not available on other fees such as bikes, surfboards, ticket cancellation or amendment.
- All concession cards must be current and held at time of booking. We cannot accept expired cards.
Who qualifies
Available to:
- Eligible NSW or ACT pensioners in possession of a valid Pensioner Concession Card.
- NSW War Widow/ers in possession of a DVA Gold Card marked 'war widow'.
Entitlement
- Pensioner entitlement is for four single journeys within NSW each calendar year.
Conditions
- First Class: A booking fee applies (minimum $10 or 15% of the Adult fare, whichever is higher).
- Economy Class: No fare or booking fee within NSW. If travelling interstate, you'll pay 50% of the Economy or First Class fare for the portion outside NSW.
- Sleeping Berths: Extra charges apply.
- If the itinerary begins in one year and ends in the next, vouchers will be deducted from the year the journey began.
- For interstate journeys, the voucher can be used for payment of the NSW portion of the fare.
- Bookings are compulsory and subject to availability.
- Customers must hold a valid concession card at the time of booking, even if this concession card does not cover the date of travel.
- The equivalent Peak Adult fare will be charged, and fines may apply for travelling without a valid concession card that matches a customer’s ticket.
- Travel must be to/from Sydney Trains or NSW TrainLink Intercity service locations listed on your ticket.
- Reservations for Sydney Trains/NSW TrainLink Intercity services must be made at the time of booking.
- If you don’t reserve the Sydney Trains/NSW TrainLink Intercity legs of your journey when booking, you’ll need to buy a separate ticket.
Who qualifies
Available to:
- NSW/ACT Pensioners with a valid Pensioner Concession Card (PCC). Find out more

Fares
- $2.50 per segment for Economy class travel between regional locations in NSW.
Conditions
- CPE cannot be purchased from Sydney Trains/NSW TrainLink Intercity railway stations or within specified boundaries (including Sydney).
- Customers booking a CPE are no longer required to register/verify their concession card.
- Reservations and ticketing can only be made within 7 days of the date of travel.
- Cannot be combined with other offers.
- No refunds or changes are allowed.
Journey details
- A travel segment is defined as a journey completed within the same day, with a stopover of no more than 12 hours.
- Bookings can only be made within 7 days of the date of travel.
- Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or at select NSW TrainLink outlets.
Travel boundaries
- Not valid for travel to/from or through the area around Sydney, Nowra, Moss Vale, Lithgow, Muswellbrook, Dungog, Karuah, and Booral. See travel boundary map (pdf 628KB)
- Not available for travel to/from certain interstate locations like Melbourne, Brisbane, or Surfers Paradise. However, it can be used for travel between Oberon and Mt Victoria in NSW, and some locations in Victoria like Mildura and Wodonga.
Unlimited Travel: Allows unlimited journeys within a set time period: 14 days, one month, three months, or six months.
Available to
- NSW residents and overseas visitors: The pass can be purchased by international visitors to Australia.
Validity
- Travel must start and finish within the pass's validity period, starting from the first journey. If you have an overnight trip, it can extend into the day after the final validity date.
Pass validation
- The pass must be validated within six months of purchase and all travel completed before it expires.
Book your travel
- The pass is only a receipt; you must book all trips separately. Bookings are essential on all NSW TrainLink Regional services.
Booking and usage
- Pass holders need to book each leg of their trip and hold a valid ticket for each journey.
- The pass is not transferable and entitles the holder to only one booking on any service.
Upgrades:
- Economy pass holders can upgrade to First Class or a sleeping berth by paying the difference.
- Premium pass holders can upgrade to a sleeping berth on payment of applicable upgrade amount.
- Premium pass holders are not entitled to a refund of the fare between the First Class and Economy fares if there are no First Class seats available.
Child Pass:
- Available for children aged 4–15 or holders of a valid NSW School Pupil ID card (Senior Secondary Student NSW Transport Concession Card).
Conditions:
- No other concessions or discounts are allowed in conjunction with the pass.
- Refunds are not permitted after the pass is validated. No refunds on lost, stolen, invalidated or expired passes.
- If you want a refund before the pass is validated, you must apply within 6 months of purchase. Cancellation fees apply.
- Not valid for travel on Great Southern Railway, Queensland Travel Train, or Melbourne Met services.
- If train services are replaced by road coaches, no refund is given.
- Travel on NSW TrainLink Intercity or Sydney Train services is only permitted when travelling in conjunction with a connecting NSW TrainLink Regional service.
Conditions of travel
NSW TrainLink aims to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all customers. Please review the policies for Regional services below:
- Alcohol is available for purchase on our trains between midday and 11pm to passengers over 18 years of age.
- While on board a train, you are not permitted to drink alcohol that has been purchased anywhere other than the buffet car. Fines apply.
- NSW TrainLink promotes the responsible service of alcohol and have the right to refuse to serve alcohol to passengers. NSW TrainLink can ask the police to remove intoxicated passengers from services and train stations.
- Drink alcohol in your own seat, not in the aisle or vestibule.
- You may be required to show photo identification when purchasing a ticket or boarding a NSW TrainLink service. NSW TrainLink reserves the right to refuse service to any passengers who fail to comply with such a request and provide a refund of the purchased ticket.
- We cannot guarantee connections between your NSW TrainLink service and:
- Any other transport service, including Great Southern Rail, VLine, Queensland Rail, Sydney Trains, and airline, cruise, coach, tour, or hire car operators.
- Any other NSW TrainLink service where the connecting time is under 60 minutes.
- NSW TrainLink does not take responsibility for alterations to the timetables of other transport operators.

Passenger conduct
Passengers are expected to adhere to the following conduct while using NSW TrainLink services:
- Do not put any part of your body outside any window or doorway while the service is in motion.
- Do not enter or leave the service while it is in motion.
- Do not board or leave a service that is not scheduled to pick up or set down passengers.
- Do not board or leave a service when you are not scheduled to do so.
- Always have a valid ticket and/or reservation when boarding.
- Do not occupy a sleeping berth or seat without a valid ticket and/or reservation.
- Do not board a service under the influence of alcohol, in soiled clothing, or in a manner offensive to other passengers.
Infringements
- Passengers on NSW TrainLink services are governed by the relevant laws of NSW, regardless of where the ticket was purchased or where an offence is committed. If a passenger breaches a condition of travel, NSW TrainLink reserves the right to refuse service, terminating the contract for carriage without a refund.
- If a passenger breaches any provision of the Passenger Transport Regulation 2007, staff may request police assistance to remove the passenger.
- Under the regulation, train drivers are authorised to direct that a passenger to leave the train in certain circumstances, for example where they are causing or is likely to cause, inconvenience to other passengers or to the driver of the train (whether because the person is under the influence of alcohol or another drug, or for any other reason).
Personal Safety Cameras
- Staff on NSW TrainLink Regional services may be wearing personal safety cameras to help keep you safe.
- Audio and camera images may also be used by police.
- If you see anti-social behaviour or feel unsafe, tell a staff member right away.

NSW TrainLink provides a smoke free environment for both passengers and staff. The smoking or vaping of any substance is not allowed on trains or platforms or in booking offices and other enclosed areas.
Smoke detectors are fitted in all areas of the train, including toilets and vestibules. Passengers found smoking on board will be fined and asked to leave the train or coach.
Please don't leave the train for a cigarette break when it stops during your journey as it may have departed by the time you return. If such a situation occurs, NSW TrainLink will not be liable for any consequences.
1. This ticket is issued to and accepted by the person named in the ticket (hereinafter called "the holder"), subject to the terms and conditions hereinafter contained and to the Railways Acts, By-Laws, Regulations and General Conditions of Carriage in force in each Railway System to which this ticket applies in respect of travel within that System.
2. Each of the Railway Systems contracts on its own behalf for carriage of the holder on the transport services which it operates and as agents for the other Railway Systems where the transport services extend to the jurisdiction of the other Railway Systems.
3. To the fullest extent permissible by law, each Railway System shall be under no obligation or liability whatsoever to any person as a result of:
(a) Any inaccuracy, error or misdescription contained in any travel or tour brochure; or
(b) Any change in any ticket price; or
(c) Withdrawal of or failure to provide any service set out in such travel or tour brochure.
4. The issuer of this ticket shall not be liable to the purchaser or the holder in the event of the loss of or theft of this ticket or if it is honoured when presented by any person other than the person named therein or if the ticket is mislaid.
5. This ticket is not transferable.
6. Each Railway System may use any mode of transport to carry the holder.
7. Each Railway System shall not be liable to the holder for loss, damage or delay caused by or arising from riot, Act of God, civil commotion, Act of terrorism, strikes, lockouts, stoppages or restraint of labour from whatever cause whether partial or general. Nor shall each Railway System be liable to the holder for loss, damage or delay caused by or arising from the failure of a Railway System to give a ticket holder notice of:
(a) the withdrawal or cancellation of any service to which the ticket holder is entitled;
(b) the occurrence of any of the events, matters or things set out in this Condition;
(c) the threat, likelihood, possibility or probability of the occurrence of any of the events, matters or things set out in this Condition.
8. Each Railway System shall not be liable for any consequences arising out of or from any variation in the time of arrival at or departure from any station or point of any train, bus or other travel service.
9. Each Railway System may in its sole discretion, without liability therefore, cancel wholly or in part any of the trains, buses or other services shown in the published timetables or vary the stations or points at which the trains, buses or other services will pick up or set down passengers.
10. Each Railway System may during any journey change the mode of transport.
11. A cancellation fee will be charged should the holder cancel this ticket:
(a) The cancellation fee on rail travel within a Railway System shall be determined according to the Railways Acts, By-Laws, Regulations and Conditions of Carriage in force within that Railway System;
(b) Any cancellation fee imposed will be deducted from the value of this ticket before a refund, if any, is given;
(c) To ensure that a ticket holder receives a maximum refund in the event that the ticket will not be used the ticket holder must give the longest possible prior notice of cancellation;
(d) Refunds will not be allowed on expired tickets.
12. NSW Trains reserves the right to refuse service to passengers where the passenger:
- does not hold a valid ticket (including travelling on a concessional fare to which they are not entitled).
- is, or is likely to, create a disturbance on the train (including where they are under the influence of alcohol, drugs or for any other reason).
- has clothes or belongings which are dirty and could cause damage to other passengers, their belongings or the train.
- has items of such size and dimension that cannot be safely carried on the train.
- is consuming alcohol they have brought onto the train.
- is smoking.
- is causing any damage to the train, including acts of graffiti vandalism.
- is threatening staff or other customers, including, but not limited to acts of violence or apprehended violence.
13. Pensioners must be in possession of a valid Pensioner Concession card issued in their name by Centrelink or the Department of Veterans' Affairs (whether electronic or physical) in order to obtain a concessional fare.
14. NSW Trains reserves the right to inspect items of luggage and bags brought onto the train by the customer.
15. Train drivers and Authorised Officers employed by NSW Trains are able to give directions to customers to not enter or leave a train or railway premises for reasons including breach of these terms and conditions and/or for committing offences under Railway Legislation. Where such a direction is given the customer must comply and remain away for at least 2 hours unless the customer has a reasonable excuse. Failure to comply with a direction of Trains driver or Authorised Officer is an offence which carries a maximum penalty of $1,100.
16. NSW Trains reserves the right to contact police to remove customers who fail to comply with these terms and conditions or who are otherwise committing an offence.
17. NSW Trains advises that its staff may be using personal safety cameras on board trains which are capable of recording audio and video of any alleged incidents which may be in contravention of these terms and conditions.
18. NSW Trains will only record and use personal information to the extent necessary to process and confirm the booking, confirm payment, provide service information (including trackwork and any other changes to the service including timetable and platform details) and for marketing purposes, but, in respect of marketing, only where the customer provides their consent.
