Tips for travelling long distances with children
We want you to stay connected to family and friends, or to make memorable moments together, so let NSW TrainLink take you there.
We know that travelling long distances with children can take some planning, so we have come up with some travel tips to make your journey easier.
Best value fares
Our regional train and coach network can take you to 365+ destinations, so why not take advantage of some of our best value fares online.
When travelling with the family why not take advantage of our Child and Family fares?
Child $1 fare - Children (ages 4 to 15 years) can travel for just $1 when travelling with one or more adults who pay full (Adult Peak or Standard) fare. Free travel for infants (aged 3 and under).
Family fares - Family Fare applies to one or more Adults travelling with two or more children. The first two children are charged the current Child fare and any additional children travel free! This makes for an excellent family saver deal. Conditions apply.
Here are our top booking tips to save you money:
- Book early and travel outside peak times. Save up to 20% off the standard Adult fare when you book five or more days prior to departure with our Advance booking discount.
- Book online - Save up to 35% off standard fare with our Online Saver Fares.
- Take advantage of our Child $1 or family fares.
Food and drink onboard
Did you know that you can pack your own food to take onboard our regional train services?
Or you can take advantage of our onboard menu offering in the buffet car.
We serve a variety of snacks and healthy food options, including gluten free, and also a range of more substantial hot meals for those longer trips.
Our menu changes seasonally, so check out our latest onboard menu and have a look what’s on offer before you travel.
Keeping the kids entertained
We all know that it can be hard to keep kids occupied when travelling long distances.
Make sure any devices are fully charged before you travel. You can now recharge your devices at EzyCharge stations on the NSW TrainLink network.
We suggest bringing a travel pack of activities such as colouring books, stickers, puzzles and small toys.
Check the luggage restrictions before you pack
You are allowed a total of three pieces of luggage per seat booked on NSW TrainLink Regional trains and coaches including; one item of hand luggage and two large and/or heavy items.
Baby strollers, prams and capsules are considered hand luggage. These items can be stowed in the luggage area at the end of the carriage.
Read our luggage guidelines for more details.
Stay safe while travelling
Our aim is to keep you safe at all times.
Make sure you board with the pram in front, lifting the front wheels over the gap.
Read our safety guide on travelling with prams and children.
If you have any concerns or need assistance, ask transport staff.
