Which ticket do you need?

NSW TrainLink Regional trains and coaches 

NSW TrainLink services operate long-distance trains and coaches to regional and interstate destinations.

Book your ticket online, by phone, or with an accredited sales agent. 

Note: Opal cards cannot be used on these services.

Intercity trains

Intercity trains connect Sydney with the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter, and Illawarra. Tap on and off with an Opal card or contactless payment.

Local regional buses

For local regional bus services, pay directly with cash to the driver or by purchasing pre-paid tickets. Some services accept contactless payment, such as a bank card or Opal card.

How much will my ticket cost?

Fares for NSW TrainLink Regional services depend on:

  • distance
  • travel class (Economy or First Class)
  • concession eligibility
  • fare seasons

Discounts and seasonal offers may also apply. 

Fare types

Adult

The adult fare is the standard full fare paid by any customer aged of 16 years or over who does not hold a concession card valid for travel in NSW.

Child (4 - 15 years)

Children pay around 50% off the adult fare. A $1 Child fare is available when travelling with a full-paying adult. Children under 4 travel free. Family fares are available for extra savings.

Concession

Eligible seniors, pensioners, students, and concession card holders can get up to 50% off full fares. Discounts vary by concession type and route.

You must show proof of entitlement when booking and carry it while travelling.

Fares are higher during peak travel periods due to increased demand. Peak seasons typically include:

  • Public holidays
  • Major events
  • Long weekends

Travel class options

  • Economy: Most seats on Regional trains and all coach travel are Economy class.
  • First Class: Limited seating with more legroom and greater recline. Sleeper compartments convert to day seats.

How to book

NSW TrainLink Regional services must be booked in advance to secure your seat. Tickets can be purchased:

  • Online: You can search for trips online to book regional tickets.
  • By phone: Call NSW TrainLink on 13 22 32 to reserve your tickets.
  • In-person: Purchase tickets in person at major train stations or NSW TrainLink booking offices from registered ticket sales agents.
