Sydney to Grafton trains reinstated

Passengers on the north coast will have more options to travel by rail, with the daily XPTs train services that run between Sydney and Grafton returning in April.

The Sydney to Grafton train will resume service from Tuesday 28 April, while the Grafton to Sydney train will resume service from Wednesday 29 April 2026.

The first Sydney to Grafton service will feature a special 1980s red coloured livery.

In addition to the reinstated direct services, passengers can also continue to catch the existing four daily rail options with the Sydney to Brisbane and Sydney to Casino services, as well as existing regular NSW TrainLink coach services.

Best available services will be displayed when booking your ticket.

The trains were replaced by coach services in April 2025 due to major fleet maintenance occurring under the XPT life extension project.

Passengers should be aware that while the train services have resumed on the Sydney to Grafton route, coaches may still be used to replace trains during planned trackwork and unplanned disruptions caused by weather events and other incidents.
