Important event information

Sydney Marathon, to be held on Sunday 15 September 2024, is it’s in final candidacy year in the bid to become an Abbott World Marathon Major, and if successful will join the prestigious marathon cities – New York, Boston, Chicago, London, Tokyo, and Berlin. This year, Sydney Marathon events include the full 42km marathon course, 10km course and 4.2km Mini Marathon course. For maps of the course routes - visit the Sydney Marathon website.

Taking part in the event?

  • Travel on public transport is included in your Sydney Marathon event registration, simply show your race bib to transport staff when boarding services. Note, an additional station access fee applies for travel to and from Sydney International and Domestic Airport Stations.
  • Plenty of extra early-morning transport services will be running to get you to the new start line at North Sydney Oval.
  • Participants in Start Groups A, B, E or F should arrive via Victoria Cross Metro Station or North Sydney Train Station. Participants in Start Groups C and D should arrive via Crows Nest Metro Station.
  • With major road closures along and surrounding the 42km marathon course and widespread special event clearway parking restrictions in effect, driving to and from the event is not an option on race day. Leave the car at home and let transport get you there and home again.
  • If you have to get dropped off use the dedicated zones at ANZAC Park Public School on Anzac Ave at Ernest St or the accessible drop off zone at North Sydney Boys High School, entry via Falcon St.
  • Be aware that due to the event road closures, buses and light rail services will be heavily impacted. You may need to change transport modes to continue your trip to the start line, and on your way back home.

Cheering on the participants or have other plans?

  • There are a number of spectator live sites across the course where you can cheer on the participants. For details visit the event website.
  • Sydneysiders are urged to familiarise themselves with the major road closures and detours. Some suburbs will be impacted for majority of the day, making travel by vehicle difficult and lengthy. Where possible avoid unnecessary travel on Marathon day.
  • Major roads in North Sydney, the Sydney CBD, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Moore Park and Kingsford including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Western Distributor, Oxford St and Anzac Pde will be closed between 3.30am and 3pm for Sydney Marathon events. See detailed closure listing below.
  • The Harbour Bridge will close from 4am to 10am and major roads from the city to Moore Park will be closed until 2pm including College St, Park St, Oxford St and Flinders St. Sections of Macquarie St will remain closed until 3pm, while Anzac Pde from Moore Park to Kingsford will be closed from 5am to 11.30am this year.
  • Widespread special event clearway parking restrictions will also be in effect along and surrounding the course. Motorists and residents should check signs carefully on the day and on Saturday night as clearways come into effect from 12.01am Sunday morning. Vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. See detailed clearway listing below.

Sydney Marathon 2024 participants and volunteers are entitled to travel to and from the event on the following public transport services below. Just show your race bib, finishers medal or volunteer t-shirt to transport staff when boarding services.

  • Sydney Trains & NSW TrainLink Intercity services (non-booked services bounded by Bomaderry, Goulburn, Bathurst, Scone and Dungog stations)
  • Sydney Metro services
  • Regular route metropolitan and outer metropolitan bus services
  • Sydney and Newcastle Ferries
  • Sydney and Newcastle Light Rail services

Remember to keep your race bib, finishers medal or volunteer t-shirt safe for your return journey home, as these are also your ticket to travel on public transport or you'll need to use a valid Opal card. Your entitlement is valid on public transport services until 4am the next day.

Note: an additional station access fee applies for travel to or from Domestic and International Airport stations and is not covered by 2024 Sydney Marathon travel entitlements. If you're travelling from these stations you'll need to pay the train station access fee.

The TCS Sydney Marathon Running Show presented by ASICS is Australia’s biggest running expo.

With 50 exhibitors, event partners, and charities, you’ll get the latest technology, knowledge, and support to make your race prep easier than ever – regardless of experience. Visitors to the show can also take advantage of the free exhibition, displaying the newest trends in health and fitness. For more information visit the event website.

All participants must pick up their race bib during the Running Show, while non-participants can still take part and enjoy the event.

Getting there

Attendees are encouraged to plan their trip and consider all the available travel options ahead of time. 

  • Ticketing: Remember, you'll need to use an Opal card or contactless payment card/device when travelling on public transport to and from the event. Register your details online at Opal or via the Opal Travel app ahead of time.
  • Trains: the closest stations to ICC Sydney are Central and Town Hall. From Central, change for L1 Dulwich Hill line light rail services to the Exhibition Centre stop, which is across from the venue. You can also walk from Central via Quay St or Hay St. From Town Hall you can walk to Darling Harbour via Druitt St.
  • etro: the closest metro stations to ICC Sydney are Central and Gadigal (near Town Hall). From Central continue on foot via Quay St or Hay St, from Gadigal take the Bathurst St exit and continue along Bathurst St or Druitt St towards Darling Harbour to reach ICC Sydney.
  • Light rail: the closest light rail stop is Exhibition Centre on the L1 Dulwich Hill Line, which runs between Central Station and the Inner West. Catch an L1 Line service to Exhibition Centre, the stop is located across from the venue. Light rail services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Alternatively catch a L2 Randwick or L3 Kingsford Line light rail service to Town Hall and continue on foot via Druitt St towards ICC Sydney.
  • Driving: If you have to drive, expect delays and allow extra travel time on roads approaching the precinct, particularly on weekdays during the morning and evening peaks. Parking is available at ICC Sydney, entry via Darling Drive. Alternatively, the closest vehicle drop-off points are located at Iron Wharf Place and Zollner Circuit, both accessed via Darling Drive and a short walk from the venue.   • Accessibility
    • Driving: ICC Sydney P1 car park has eight (8)  and P2 has four (4) accessible parking spaces.
    • Light Rail: ICC Sydney is located on the L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line and is serviced by two (2) light rail stops: Exhibition Centre; and Convention. The L1 Dulwich Hill light rail line departs regularly from Central
      • Alight at Convention for access to Convention Centre, Darling Harbour Theatre, and the Grand Ballroom. The distance from the station exit to the venue entrance is about 65 metres
      • Alight at Exhibition Centre for access to ICC Sydney Theatre and Exhibition Centre. The distance from the station exit to the venue entrance is about 140 metres.
      • Both stations provide at-grade and stair-free access to the venue entrances, with a signalised pedestrian crossings available to safely cross Darling Drive.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Sydney’s North West and South West via the city.

The M1 Line operates turn up-and-go Metro services in both directions between Tallawong, Chatswood and Sydenham. 

The closest Metro stations to the start line area are Victoria Cross and Crows Nest. Additional early morning Metro services will be running frequently from around 3.30am from Tallawong and 4am from Sydenham to help you get to the start line.

Metro services will run every 5 minutes until 10.30am then every 10 minutes per regular timetable.

Participants in Start Groups A, B, E or F should arrive via Victoria Cross Metro Station.

  • From Victoria Cross, take the Denison St station exit, turn right onto Berry St then left onto Walker St, then continue up to North Sydney Oval and St Leonards Park. Signage and staff will be onsite to help you find your way.

Participants in Start Groups C and D should arrive via Crows Nest Metro Station.

  • From Crows Nest, take the Clarke St exit, continue via Clarke St, turn right onto Willoughby Rd then left onto Falcon St, continue via Falcon St to reach North Sydney Oval and St Leonards Park. Signage and staff will be onsite to help you find your way.

From the finish lines, the closest Metro station is Martin Place, alternatively catch a train from Circular Quay to connect with other train lines to complete your trip home.

Getting there

The closest train station to the start line area is North Sydney on the T1 North Shore Line and T9 Northern Line.

Participants in Start Groups A, B, E or F should arrive via North Sydney Train Station, or Victoria Cross Metro Station. Participants in Start Groups C and D should arrive via Crows Nest Metro Station.

Additional extra early-morning trains will be running to arrive at North Sydney after 4am to help you get to the start line. Full timetable information will be available 2 weeks prior to the event, use the Trip Planner to plan your trip.

Signage and staff will be onsite to help you find your way.

Getting home

From the finish lines at the Opera House and Conservatorium of Music, the closest stations are Circular Quay, Wynyard, Martin Place and St James

Trains leave regularly from Circular Quay where you can change at Wynyard and Town Hall stations for services to other lines. For access to T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line trains or Metro services to Tallawong or Sydenham, walk to Martin Place.

Trackwork

Planned weekend trackwork is taking place on Sunday 15 September and may affect how you travel to and from the event. Plan ahead using the Trip Planner two weeks out from the event.

  • T2 Inner West & Leppington Line: Buses replace trains between Leppington and Liverpool. Trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern between Liverpool and the City via Granville. 
  • T5 Cumberland Line: Buses replace trains between Leppington and Liverpool. Trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern between Liverpool and Schofields or Richmond. 
  • T8 Airport & South Line: Buses replace trains between Macarthur and East Hills. Trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern between East Hills or Revesby and the City via the Airport. Buses also replace T2 Leppington Line trains between Leppington and Liverpool.
  • South Coast Line: On Sunday from 2.30am to 9.50am, buses replace trains between Bomaderry and Wollongong. Trains run between Port Kembla, Wollongong and Bondi Junction, some to a changed timetable. The 02:39 Kiama to Bondi Junction service will run up to 14 minutes earlier than the normal timetable from Kiama to Coniston, then run to the normal timetable from Wollongong to Bondi Junction.  
  • Southern Highlands Line: Buses replace trains between Goulburn, Moss Vale and East Hills. You may need to change buses to continue your journey. 

Trackwork is carried out on an ongoing basis to maintain the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Sydney Trains network. Check travel alerts and trackwork or use the Trip Planner.

Participants: The closest bus stops to the start line will be at Crows Nest and St Leonards. Additional early morning services will run from as early as 4am on key routes to the city or the north. From the city change for a train to North Sydney or Metro to Victoria Cross to get within walking distance of the start line at North Sydney Oval and St Leonards Park. Make sure to plan ahead using the Trip Planner and give yourself plenty of extra travel time so you don’t miss your start time.

Bus diversions

Significant bus diversions will be in place due to event road closures and many bus routes will be affectedBus customers need to plan ahead using the Trip Planner before heading out. For bus service disruption information, check travel alerts.

  • Route BN1: From 4am to 6am, BN1 buses will start and end trips at St Leonards Station, Pacific Hwy instead of Wynyard. Buses towards Mona Vale will start trips from St Leonards Station, Pacific Hwy, Stand A (Stop ID: 206523). Buses will also make stops along Falcon St in North Sydney and Pacific Hwy in Crows Nest. Catch a train to continue your trip between St Leonards and the city.
  • Route B1: From 4am to 10am, B-Line buses will start and end trips at St Leonards Station, Pacific Hwy instead of Wynyard. Buses towards Mona Vale will start trips from St Leonards Station, Pacific Hwy, Stand A (Stop ID: 206523). Buses will also make stops along Falcon St in North Sydney and Pacific Hwy in Crows Nest. Catch a train to continue your trip between St Leonards and the city.
  • Route 100: From 4am to 10am, route 100 buses will operate a loop service between Taronga Zoo and St Leonards only, starting and ending trips at Royal North Shore Hospital instead of the city. Services towards Taronga Zoo will start trips from Royal North Shore Hospital, Reserve Rd (Stop ID 206527). Buses will also make additional stops along Falcon St in North Sydney and Pacific Hwy at Crows Nest. Catch a train to continue your trip between St Leonards and the city.
  • Route 115: From 3:30am to 9.30am buses will start and end trips at Crows Nest instead of North Sydney. Buses will end trips at Pacific Hwy opp Crows Nest Station (Stop ID 206530). Buses towards Chatswood will start trips from Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID 206515). Stops on Blue St, Miller St and Pacific Hwy will be missed. Change for metro services to continue your trip to North Sydney.
  • Route 120: From 3.30am to 10am buses will start and end trips at Crows Nest instead of North Sydney. Buses will end trips at Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID 206515). Buses towards Chatswood will start trips from Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID 206515). Stops at Wynyard, and QVB will be missed. Change for metro or train services to continue your trip between Crows Nest and the city.
  • Routes 202, 207 and 208: From 3:30am to 12pm, buses will run to and from Crows Nest only. Buses will not run to or from the city. Services will start and end trips at Pacific Hwy opp Crows Nest Station (Stop ID 206530). Change for trains or metro services to continue your trip between Crows Nest and the city.
  • Routes 172X, 173X: From 4am to 10am, route 172X and 173X services will run between Warringah Mall and St Leonards via North Balgowlah/Balgowlah Shops only. Buses will not run to or from the city. Services to Warringah Mall will start trips from Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID: 206515) also stopping at St Leonards Station, Pacific Hwy, Stand C (Stop ID 206521) and along Falcon St in North Sydney. Catch a train to continue your trip between St Leonards and the city.
  • Routes 194, 270, 271: From 4am to 10am route 194, 270 and 271 will start and end trips at Chatswood Station bus interchange instead of the city. Buses will start trips from Chatswood Station Interchange, Stand C (Stop ID: 2067130). Catch trains or metro services to continue your trip to and from the city.
  • Route 230: From 4am to 12pm route 230 services will run between Mosman Wharf and St Leonards only. Buses will not make stops at North Sydney Station or Milsons Point. Services towards North Sydney will end trips at St Leonards Station, Pacific Hwy, Stand C. Services towards Mosman will start trips from Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID 206515), then continue towards Neutral Bay (Big Bear shopping centre).
  • Routes 252, 254, 290, 291: From 3:30am to 9.30am buses will start and end trips in Crows Nest instead of the city or North Sydney/Milsons Point. Buses will end trips at Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID 206515), buses will start trips from Pacific Hwy opp Crows Nest Station (Stop ID 206530). Stops will be missed on Sussex St, York St, Clarence St, Miller St, Falcon St, Blues Point Rd, Lavender St, North Sydney Station and Milsons Point Station. Catch metro services between Crows Nest and the city to continue your trip.
  • Route 261: From 3.30am to 9.30am route 261 buses will start and end trips at Crows Nest instead of North Sydney. Buses will end trips at Pacific Hwy opp Crows Nest Station (Stop ID 206530). Buses towards Lane Cove will start trips from Pacific Hwy opp Crows Nest Station (Stop ID 206530). Change for metro services to continue your trip between Crows Nest and North Sydney.
  • Route 263:
    • From 4am to 10am, route 263 services will operate between Crows Nest and Milsons Point via Cremorne only. Buses will not run to or from the city. Services will start and end trips at Alfred St South in Milsons Point. Stops at Wynyard and North Sydney will be missed in both directions. Change for trains to continue your trip between Milsons Point and the city.
    • From 10am to 3pm, route 263 buses will operate between Crows Nest and Wynyard Station via Cremorne only. Buses to the city will end trips at Wynyard Station, York St Stand P. Buses towards Crows Nest will start trips from Wynyard York St, Stand L. Stops on Bridge St will be missed.
  • Routes 288 and 292: From 3.30am to 10am buses will start and end trips at Crows Nest instead of the city. Buses will end trips at Crows Nest Metro station, Pacific Hwy after Oxley St (Stop ID: 206515). Buses towards Macquarie Park will start trips from Pacific Hwy opp Crows Nest Station Crows Nest (Stop ID 206530). Catch metro services to continue your trip between Crows Nest and the city.
  • Route N91: From 3.30am til last service route N91 services will start and end trips at Crows Nest instead of the city. Buses will end trips at Crows Nest Station, Pacific Hwy (Stop ID 206515), buses will start trips from Pacific Hwy at Hume St, Crows Nest (Stop ID: 206512). Stops at North Sydney Station, Town Hall and Wynyard will be missed. Catch metro services to continue trips between Crows Nest and the city.
  • Route 304: From 4am to 10.30am buses from Green Square towards the city will end trips at Museum Station, Downing Centre, Elizabeth St, Stand E (Stop ID 200049) instead of Circular Quay. Buses will start trips from Harmony Park, Hunt St, Surry Hills (Stop ID 201026). Buses will not run to or from Circular Quay, stops on Elizabeth St, Phillip St and Alfred St will be missed. Change for trains at Museum to continue your trip.
  • Route 311: From 4am until 2.30pm, buses will operate in a loop between Crown St, Woolloomooloo and Bayswater Rd, Kings Cross only. Services towards Woolloomooloo will leave from Darlinghurst Rd near Bayswater Rd (Stop ID 201111). Buses will not make stops along Oxford St, at Central Station or in Millers Point.
  • Routes 324, 325: From 4am to 2.30pm route 324 and 325 services will start and end trips in Woolloomooloo only. Services from Watsons Bay towards the city will end trips at Riley St opp Kennedy St Woolloomooloo (Stop ID 201157). Services towards Watsons Bay will start trips from William St at Palmer St (Stop ID: 201113). Buses will not run between Woolloomooloo and Walsh Bay.
  • Route 333:  From 4am to 2:30pm route 333 services will operate between Bondi Beach and Kings Cross only. Buses will not continue to Circular Quay. Buses towards the city from Bondi will end trips at Bayswater Rd near Kellett St (Temporary Stop ID: 201162). Buses towards Bondi will start trips from Kings Cross Station, Bayswater Rd, Stand D (Stop ID: 201115). Change for trains at Kings Cross station to continue your trip towards Circular Quay.
  • Route 339:
    • From 4am to 12.30pm route 339 services will run between Clovelly and Centennial Park only, buses will not run to or from Central. Buses leaving Clovelly will end trips at Darley Rd Opp Centennial Park Main Gate (Stop ID 2031107). Buses towards Clovelly will leave from Centennial Park Main Gate, Darley Rd Randwick (Stop ID 203145). Change for L2 Randwick light rail services to continue your trip to Central.
    • From 12.30pm to 2:30pm route 339 services towards the city will run as normal to Central. Services leaving Central will divert around Anzac Pde via Crown St and Cleveland St. The bus stop on Flinders St will before South Dowling St Darlinghurst (Stop ID 201014) will be missed.
  • Routes 343: From 4am to 10.30am buses will start and end trips at Central instead of Circular Quay. Buses towards the city will end trips at Central Station, Eddy Ave - Stand A (Stop ID 200039). Buses towards Kingsford will leave from Central Station, Elizabeth St, Stand E (Stop ID 201080). Change for trains at Central to continue your trip to Circular Quay.
  • Route 352: From 4am to 2:30pm services will run between Marrickville and Surry Hills only, buses will not run between Bondi Junction and Darlinghurst. Buses from Marrickville will end trips on Crown St at Campbell St (Stop ID 201097). Buses that usually start from Bondi Jct will start trips from Shannon Reserve, Crown St, Surry Hills (Stop ID 201093). Go to Central to connect with trains towards Bondi Junction, or catch route 333 buses from Kings Cross station.
  • Route 355: From 4am to 2:30pm services will run between Marrickville and Surry Hills only, buses will not run between Bondi Junction and Darlinghurst. Buses from Marrickville will end trips on Cleveland St at Crown St (Stop ID 201047). Buses that usually start from Bondi Jct will start trips from Cleveland St at Marriott St (Stop ID 201636).  Go to Central to connect with trains towards Bondi Junction, or catch route 333 buses from Kings Cross station
  • Route 370
    • From 4am to 12.30pm route 370 buses will be split into two routes – between Glebe and Kensington, and between Coogee and Randwick Junction.
    • Glebe-Kensington: Buses leaving Glebe will end trips at Todman Ave at Balfour Rd, Kensington (Stop ID 203345). Buses towards Glebe will start trips from Todman Ave at Balfour Rd (Stop ID 203332). Catch L2 Randwick light rail services to the city for faster connections towards the Inner West.
    • Coogee-Randwick: Buses from Coogee will leave as normal, ending trips at Belmore Rd, Randwick Junction. Buses towards Coogee will leave from Belmore Rd at Avoca St Randwick (Stop ID 2031158). Catch L2 Randwick light rail services to the city for faster connections towards the Inner West.
  • Route 373:
    • From 4am to 12:30pm route 373 buses will start and end trips at Randwick, services will not continue to or from the city. Buses from Coogee will end trips at Darley Rd Opp Randwick TAFE (Stop ID 203144). Buses towards Coogee will leave from Alison Rd Opp Royal Randwick Racecourse (Stop ID 203111). Change at Randwick to connect with L2 Randwick Light rail services to the city.
    • From 12.30pm to 2.30pm buses towards Central will divert around Oxford St via Fitzroy St, Foveaux St and Elizabeth St. Services towards Coogee will divert via Albion St, Crown St and Cleveland St. All stops on Oxford St and Flinders St will be missed.
  • Route 374: From 4am to 12:30pm route 374 buses will start and end trips at Randwick, services will not continue to or from the city. Buses from Coogee will end trips at Darley Rd Opp Randwick TAFE (Stop ID 203144). Buses towards Coogee will leave from Alison Rd Opp Royal Randwick Racecourse (Stop ID 203111). Change at Randwick to connect with L2 Randwick Light rail services to the city.
  • Route 389: From 4am to 2pm route 389 services will be split into two routes between Pyrmont and Town Hall, and between Woolloomooloo and Bondi Junction.
    • Pyrmont-city services will not run until 9am due to road closures in Pyrmont. From 9am to 10am buses from Pyrmont will leave from Harris St at Pyrmont Bridge Rd (Stop ID: 200916) and end trips at Town Hall Station, Park St, Stand H (Stop ID: 2000249). Buses from Town Hall to Pyrmont will pick up from Park St Stand J (Stop ID 2000425) and end trips at Miller St before Harris St, (Stop ID: 200932). Stops on Pirrama Rd will be missed.
    • Pyrmont-city from 10am to 2pm buses will run as normal through Pyrmont but end trips at Town Hall Station, Park St, Stand H (Stop ID: 2000249). Buses from Town Hall to Pyrmont will pick up from Park St Stand J (Stop ID 2000425). From the city change for trains to Bondi Junction.
    • City-Bondi Jct: Buses to Bondi Junction will start trips from Crown St at Robinson St (Stop ID: 2010100). Buses from Bondi Junction towards the city will end trips at Riley St at Kennedy St (Stop ID 201157). Continue on foot to Town Hall to connect with buses towards Pyrmont.
  • Route 390X: From 4am to 12.30pm buses will be diverting around Anzac Pde at Kingsford.  Buses will divert via Avoca St and Belmore Rd then as normal. All stops along Anzac Pde and High St at Kingsford/Kensington will be missed in both directions.
  • Route 392: From 4am to 12.30pm buses will be diverting around Anzac Pde at Kingsford via Gardeners Rd, Dalmeny Ave, Epsom Rd, Lenthall St, Todman Ave then continue as normal. Stops on Anzac Pde and Kensington Rd will be missed in both directions.
  • Route 392N: From 3.30am to 5am buses to the city will be diverting via Gardeners Rd, Botany Rd, Henderson Rd, Wyndham St, Gibbons St, Lawson Sq, Regent St, Redfern St, Chalmers St, Randle St, Elizabeth St then end trips at Central Station, Eddy Ave, Stand A (Stop ID 200039).  Services towards Matraville will start trips from Central Station, Elizabeth St, Stand E (Stop ID 201080) then divert via Redfern St, Regent St, Botany Rd, Gardeners Rd, Bunnerong Rd, then continue as normal. All stops along Oxford St and Anzac Pde will be missed between Kingsford at the city.
  • Route 396: Route 396 services will be affected in three stages throughout the day.
    • From 4am to 10.30am buses to the city will be diverting away from Kingsford, Randwick and Moore Park via Gardeners Rd, Botany Rd, Henderson Rd, Wyndham St, Gibbons St, Lawson Sq, Regent St, Redfern St, Chalmers St, Randle St, Elizabeth St then as normal. Services towards Maroubra will divert via Redfern St, Regent St, Botany Rd, Gardeners Rd, Bunnerong Rd, then continue as normal.
    • From 10.30am to 12.30pm services towards the city will continue diverting and end trips at Central Station, Eddy Ave, Stand A (Stop ID 200039). Services leaving the city towards Maroubra will start trips from Central Station, Elizabeth St, Stand E (Stop ID 201080)
    • From 12.30pm to 2:30pm services will run resume running to and from Circular Quay but continue to divert around Oxford St via Foveaux St, Albion St, Crown St and Cleveland St.
  • Route 399: From 4am to 12.30pm services will be run shorter trips turning around on Anzac Pde at Sturt St, Kingsford. Services will not run to or from Kensington. Stops on Anzac Pde between Gardeners Rd and Kensington Rd will be missed.
  • Routes 412, 423, 426, 428 and 430: From 4am to 10am buses will start and end trips at Central instead of Martin Place. Buses to the city will end trips at Central on Pitt St before Hay St (Stop ID: 2000434). Buses leaving the city will start trips from Pitt St opp Barlow St (Stop ID: 200083). Catch trains or metro services to continue your trip between Central and Martin Place.
  • Routes 431, 438X and 470: From 4am to 10am buses will start and end trips at Central instead of Martin Place. Buses to the city will end trips at Central on Pitt St at Barlow St (Stop ID: 2000428). Buses leaving the city will start trips from Pitt St opp Barlow St (Stop ID: 200083). Catch trains or metro services to continue your trip between Central and Martin Place.
  • Route 440: From 4am to 2pm route 440 services will be split into two routes between Bondi Junction and Woolloomooloo, and between Rozelle and the city (St James Station).
    • Rozelle-City: Buses from Rozelle will end trips at St James Station, Elizabeth St, Stand C (Stop ID: 200057). Buses towards Rozelle will start trips from Museum Station, Elizabeth St Stand C (Stop ID 200073)
    • Bondi Jct-City: Buses from Bondi Junction towards the city will end trips at Riley St opp Kenndey St (Stop ID: 201157). Buses towards Bondi Junction will start trips from Crown St at Robinson St (Stop ID: 2010100).
    • Continue on foot between Woolloomooloo and Town Hall for connecting buses between Rozelle and Bondi, alternatively consider catching trains to Bondi instead.
  • Route 437, 441 and 442: From 4am to 10am services to the city will end trips at QVB, Market St, Stand F. Services leaving the city will start trips from QVB, York St, Stand B (Stop ID: 200042). Services will not run between the Domain and QVB. Continue on foot.
  • Route 461X: From 4am to 3pm route 461x will end trips at St James Station, Elizabeth St Stand C, (Stop ID: 200057) instead of the Domain. Buses will start trips from Museum Station, Elizabeth St Stand C (Stop ID: 200073). Stops on Park St, Riley St and William St will be missed.
  • Routes 500, 500x, 506: From 4am to 3pm route 500, 500x and 506 services to the city Hyde Park/Domain will end trips at Town Hall House, Druitt St, Stand N, Sydney (Stop ID 2000282). Services leaving the city will start trips from Town Hall House, Druitt St, Stand L Sydney (Stop ID 2000423). Stops on Park St, William St, Riley St and St Marys Rd near Hyde Park and The Domain will be missed in both directions.
  • Route 501: From 4am to 9am buses will divert around a section of Harris St in Pyrmont via Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Wentworth Park Rd and William Henry St. Buses towards the city will end trips at Pitt St at Barlow St Haymarket (Stop ID 2000428) Stops on Harris St will be missed, use alternative stops nearby and continue on foot.
  • Route 504: From 4am to 3pm route 504 services to the city will end trips at St James Station, Elizabeth St Stand C, (Stop ID: 200057) instead of the Domain. Buses towards Chiswick will start trips from Town Hall Station, Park St, Stand K (Stop ID: 2000252). Stops on Park St, Riley St and William St will be missed.
  • Routes 607x and 610x: From 4am to 10am route 607X and 610X services to the city will end trips at Macquarie Park Station, Waterloo Rd Stand E.  Buses that usually leave from the city will instead start trips from Macquarie Park Station, Waterloo Rd Stand D. Change for a metro service to continue your trip between Macquarie Park and the city.
  • Route N92: From 4am to 10am route N92 services to the city will end trips at Macquarie Park Station, Lane Cove Rd Stand A.  Buses that usually leave from the city will instead start trips from Macquarie Park Station, Lane Cove Rd Stand B. Change for a metro service to continue your trip between Macquarie Park and the city.

Sydney Ferries are a great way to get around the city but services can be popular and may reach capacity, especially on weekends so allow extra travel time and consider the alternate transport options.

There are no wharves close by to the start line and limited early morning ferries operate on a Sunday.

Use alternative transport modes including trains, metro and buses instead.

From the finish areas at Sydney Opera House or the Conservatorium of Music you can catch one of the many ferries leaving from nearby Circular Quay wharves. Ferries will run to a regular Sunday timetable.

L1 Dulwich Hill Line

L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services run between Central Station (Grand Concourse) and Dulwich Hill via Darling Harbour and the Inner West. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

  • Extra early-morning services will run from 3.45am from Dulwich Hill to Central, and from 4.30am from Central Grand Concourse to Dulwich Hill.
  • Change at Central to connect with Trains to North Sydney or Metro Services to Victoria Cross or Crows Nest.

L2 Randwick Line

L2 Randwick Line light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Services run regularly, plan your trip using Trip Planner. 

  • Early morning services will commence from 3.45am running every 15 minutes.
  • Change at Central to connect with Metro to Victoria Cross or Crows Nest, or for Trains to North Sydney
  • From 3.45am to 10am: L2 services will run between Randwick and Town Hall only. Services will not run between Circular Quay and Town Hall due to event road closures.
  • From 10am, full L2 services between Circular Quay and Randwick will resume as normal.

L3 Kingsford Line

L3 Kingsford Line services run between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street).

  • Early morning services will commence from 3.45am running every 15 minutes.
  • Change at Central to connect with Metro to Victoria Cross or Crows Nest, or for Trains to North Sydney
  • From 3.45am to 6am: L3 services will run between Juniors Kingsford and Town Hall only. Services will not run between Circular Quay and Town Hall due to event road closures.
  • From 6am until 10am L3 services will run between Moore Park and Town Hall only. Services will not run between Circular Quay and Town Hall or between Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford due to event road closures.
  • From 10am until 12pm L3 services will run between Moore Park and Circular Quay only. Services will not run between Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford due to event road closures.
  • From 12pm services resume as normal operating between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford in both directions.

L2/L3 alternative transport options:

  • When L2 and L3 services are partially closed between Circular Quay and Town Hall, use alternative transport including trains or walking if able to.
  • When L3 services are partially closed between Moore Park and Juniors Kingsford, use alternative transport including L2 Randwick Line services instead, or walking if able to.
  • Due to the Sydney Marathon road closures in the Kensington and Kingsford areas, light rail replacement buses will not be operate.
  • Allow plenty of extra travel time as services will be busy, and plan ahead using the Trip Planner.

Major roads in North Sydney, the Sydney CBD, Pyrmont, Darlinghurst, Moore Park and Kingsford including the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Western Distributor, Oxford Street and Anzac Parade will be closed between 3.30am and 3pm for Sydney Marathon on Sunday 15 September.

Widespread special event clearway parking restrictions will also be in effect along and surrounding the course. Motorists and residents should check signs carefully on the day and on Saturday night as clearways come into effect from 12.01am Sunday morning. Vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. See detailed clearway listing below.

  • The Sydney Harbour Bridge, Cahill Expressway and Western Distributor will be closed in both directions from 4am to 10amThe Harbour Bridge cycleway and walkway will remain open while its closed to traffic from 4am to 10am.
  • Major roads from the city to Moore Park will be closed from 4am to 2pm including College St, Park St, Oxford St and Flinders St. Sections of Macquarie St will remain closed until 3pm, while Anzac Pde from Moore Park to Kingsford will be closed from 5am to 11.30am this year.
  • Motorists will only be able to travel east/west across the course via the Cross City Tunnel which will be toll-free from 5am to 3pm on event day however long delays are expected and motorists should avoid non-essential travel.
  • The Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Eastern Distributor, Victoria Road and the Cross City Tunnel alternative routes remain open however long delays are expected.

Please note due to the closure of the Harbour Bridge motorists needing to access the city from the north before 10am will need to travel south via the Harbour Tunnel, exit Kings Cross at William St then join Cross City Tunnel (toll-free) to exit at Harbour St.

    • No direct access between the Anzac Bridge and Sydney Harbour Bridge until 10am
    • Motorists can use the Sydney Harbour Tunnel or Victoria Rd/Gladesville Bridge instead.
    • Note: Access to the Sydney Harbour Tunnel northbound from the west is via the Cross City Tunnel only, no access via the city while major roads are closed. Drivers west of the city needing to travel north prior to 10am should use Victoria Rd/Gladesville Bridge.
  • Pyrmont

Parking

Car parking options around the start area in North Sydney is very limited as major roads will be closed from 4am restricting access to most car parks.

Event participants are strongly encouraged to catch public transport with trains and metro services running frequently to North Sydney, and Victoria Cross, bringing you within walking distance of the start line. Travel on transport is also covered in your event entry.

Special event clearways

Special event clearway parking restrictions will be in effect on major roads along and surrounding the course between 12.01am and 10am. In North Sydney some clearways remain in effect until 12 midday, in the city some clearways remain in effect until 3pm, while in Kensington and Kingsford some clearways remain in effect until 11.30am

  • North Sydney: clearways will be in effect from 12.0am to 10am on Miller St, Falcon St, Ridge St, McLaren St, Blue St, Berry St, Walker St, Carlow St, Pacific Hwy and surrounding local streets.
  • St Leonards and Crows Nest: clearways will be in effect from 4am to 12pm on Pacific Hwy, Reserve Rd, Oxley St and Alexander St.

  • Kings Cross: clearways will be in effect from 5am to 3pm on Bayswater Rd between Ward Ave and Kellett St/Penny Lane.
  • Darlinghurst, Surry Hills: clearways will be in effect from 12.01am to 10am on Oxford St, Flinders St, South Dowling St and on surrounding local roads. Clearways will also be in effect from 5am to 11.30am on sections of Fitzroy St.
  • Moore Park & Kingsford: clearways will be in effect from 12.01am to 10am on Anzac Pde, Moore Park Rd, Lang Rd, Driver Ave, Cleveland St, Dacey Ave, Centennial Parklands internal roads and on surrounding local roads. Clearways will also be in effect from 5am to 11.30am on sections of Cleveland St, Gardeners Rd, Sturt St and Todman Ave.
  • Pyrmont & Ultimo: clearways will be in effect from 12.01am to 10am on Wattle St, Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Harris St, Pirrama Rd, Pyrmont St, Bowman St and surrounding local roads.
  • Macquarie Park: clearways will be in effect from 5am to 10am on Waterloo Rd between Wicks Rd and Thomas Holt Drive (northern side only).

Clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicle types and apply even to local residents and TfNSW Mobility Scheme Permit holders. Check signs carefully as vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. If your vehicle is towed, you can search your vehicle registration at the Find My Car website to find its new location, or alternatively call 132 701 to speak to an operator.

If you are getting dropped off at the start line be aware that road closures will restrict direct vehicle access to the start area in North Sydney Oval an St Leonards Park.

The closest areas you'll be able to be dropped off will be around Cammeray on Ernest St or local streets in North Sydney/Crows Nest.

Drop off zone: ANZAC Park Public School, Anzac Ave at Ernest St 

Accessible drop off zone: North Sydney Boys High School, entry via Falcon St

Taxi ranks within the road closure area will not operate during the event. Some taxi ranks in the CBD will operate for local residents and hotel access only.

From the finish areas in the city keep in mind that roads will still be closed around Circular Quay until 10am, and until 3pm on Macquarie St so if you are being picked up or booking a ride-share vehicle prior to this time you will need to walk outside of the closure area west of Bridge St.

Delays are expected for taxis getting to and from the start and finish areas. Participants are strongly encouraged to catch public transport instead.

The Cross City Tunnel will be free from 5am to 3pm during the event on Sunday 15 September. The toll should not be added by taxi drivers, if this occurs report it.

Drop off zones

A dedicated accessible drop off zone will be available near the start line area at North Sydney Boys High School, entry via Falcon St.

Transport

North Sydney Train station is a fully accessible station with lifts to street level.

Victoria Cross Metro Station has multiple lifts at the Miller Street North exit to Miller St.

Queues may be experienced at both stations as participants arrive for each event so allow extra travel time and arrive early.
