Important event information

Large crowds are expected to attend the Sydney Lunar Festival in Haymarket. With road closures and parking restrictions in place, public transport is the best way to get to the event. 

Trains and Metro services run regularly to Central where you can walk to the event or you can change for L1 Line light rail services leaving from the Grand Concourse to the Paddy’s Markets stop to get within walking distance of the event. 

Remember you'll need to use an Opal card or contactless payment card/device when travelling to and from the event. Register your details online at Opal or via the app ahead of time.

Road closures will be in place between 10am Saturday 1 February until 1am Sunday 2 February, and special event clearways will be in effect between 8am Saturday 1 February until 1am Sunday 2 February. Keep this in mind if you’re planning on driving. Allow extra travel time as traffic may be heavier than usual while closures are in place.

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail. Remember to top up your Opal card before you travel to avoid waiting in line at top-up machines. You can top up your card online or at an Opal retailer.

More ways to pay

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Sydney’s north-west and south-west via the city.    

The M1 Line operates turn up-and-go metro services in both directions between Tallawong, Chatswood and Sydenham. Metro services start running from early morning, every 5 to 10 minutes, until late at night.    

Please note that due to planned weekend trackwork, buses replace Metro services between Tallawong and Chatswood. Metro services run between Chatswood and Sydenham.

Alight at Central to get within close walking distance of the event or connect with light rail services.

The closest station to Haymarket is Central which is a short walk to the event site in Chinatown.

Alternatively you can catch L1 light rail to Paddys Markets or L2 and L3 light rail services to Chinatown with connections and Town Hall, Central and Wynyard train stations.

Trackwork

Planned weekend trackwork is taking place on Saturday 1 February on the following lines and may affect how you travel to and from the event. Plan ahead using the Trip Planner:  

  • M1 Metro Line: Buses replace services between Tallawong and Chatswood. Metro services run between Chatswood and Sydenham. 
  • T1 Western Line: From 8am to 12pm, Richmond trains run to a changed timetable between Richmond and Liverpool. Change trains at Parramatta to continue your journey towards the City. 
  • T2 Leppington & Inner West Line: From 8am to 12pm, trains run to a changed timetable and frequency between Leppington and the City via Granville or Regents Park. Inner West trains also run to a changed timetable and frequency. Some T9 Northen Line trains make an extra stop at Ashfield. 
  • T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line: From 8am to 12pm, trains run to a changed timetable and frequency between Leppington and the City via Regents Park. Inner West trains also run to a changed timetable and frequency. Some T9 Northen Line trains make an extra stop at Ashfield. 
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line: Buses replace trains between Sydenham and Central. Trains run to a changed timetable between Cronulla or Waterfall and Sydenham, and between Central and Bondi Junction. Metro services run between Sydenham and the City.  
  • T8 Airport & South Line: Buses replace trains between Sydenham and Central. Metro services run between Sydenham and the City. Trains run between Macarthur, Revesby and the City via the Airport, some to a changed timetable. Trackwork on the T4 and South Coast lines may also affect how you travel. Change at Wolli Creek for trains towards T4 Illawarra and South Coast line stations. 
  • T9 Northern Line: From 8am to 12pm, some trains make an extra stop at Ashfield. 
  • Hunter Line: From 8.50pm to 2.20am, buses replace trains from Newcastle Interchange to Telarah. From 10pm to 3.30am, buses replace trains from Telarah to Newcastle Interchange. 
  • South Coast Line: Trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern between South Coast Line stations and Hurstville only. Change trains at Hurstville to continue your journey. Trackwork also affects T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line trains between Sydenham and Central.

A number of regular route buses run to Central stopping at Eddy Ave, Pitt St or Railway Square within walking distance of Chinatown. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

Catch one of the many ferry services to Circular Quay and change for a light rail service to Chinatown to get to the festival.

L1 Dulwich Hill Line 

L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services run between Central Station (Grand Concourse) and Dulwich Hill via Darling Harbour and the Inner West. Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner

Catch a light rail service to Paddy’s Markets to get within walking distance of the festival. Alternatively you can walk from Central.  

L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines 

L2 Randwick light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) and L3 Kingsford line services run between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner

Catch a light rail service to Chinatown to get within walking distance of the festival. Alternatively you can walk from Central.  

L4 Westmead and Carlingford Line 

L4 Westmead and Carlingford Line light rail services run between Carlingford and Westmead via Parramatta CBD. Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner

Alight at Parramatta Square and connect with trains to Central from Parramatta Station. From Central you can continue on foot to the festival or connect with L2/L3 light rail services to Chinatown to get within closer walking distance.

Passengers are reminded that trams can’t stop quickly or easily – so please stop, listen and look around for trams and use designated pedestrian crossings. Read the news story for more information.

If you have to drive, plan to arrive early and be aware of increased pedestrian activity in the area. Traffic may be busier than usual while road closures are in place. Allow extra travel time, follow the directions of traffic control and be aware of increased pedestrian activity in the area. 

Road closures 

To accommodate the event and crowd safety road closures will be in place;  

  • From 10am Saturday 1 February to 1am Sunday 2 February: Sections of Harbour Street, Hay Street, Kimber Lane, Little Hay Street and Sussex Street.  
  • From 12pm midday Saturday 1 February to 1am Sunday 2 February: Sections of George Street, Thomas Street and Ultimo Road.  

Managed access will also be in place on surrounding streets for businesses and residents during these times.

Parking

There are a number of secure car parks nearby including Market City however these are expected to fill quickly. For parking locations visit City of Sydney - Parking.

Special Event Clearways

Special event clearways will be in effect from 8am Saturday 1 February until 1am Sunday 2 February on sections of Harbour Street, Hay Street, Little Hay Street and Sussex Street, and from 10am Saturday 1 February until 1am Sunday 2 February on sections of Thomas Lane, Thomas Street and Ultimo Road.

Clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicle types and apply even to local residents and TfNSW Mobility Scheme Permit holders. Check signs carefully as vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. If your vehicle is towed, you can search your vehicle registration at the Find My Car website to find its new location, or alternatively call 132 701 to speak to an operator.
