For PrePay or Opal only buses and PrePay bus stops, you need to have an Opal card before you board. You cannot buy a bus ticket from the driver.
Some bus routes are PrePay or Opal only at all times while some bus stops are PrePay at certain times of the day.
Opal cards help reduce boarding times so the bus can get moving more quickly.
PrePay or Opal Only buses
Some bus routes are PrePay or Opal Only at all times. No matter where or when you catch a PrePay or Opal Only bus service, you must have an Opal card to board.
Some PrePay only routes in Trip Planner results and bus timetables are identified by the route name. For example, Route 333 PrePay Only - Nth Bondi to City.
However other Opal Only routes are identified within Trip Plan results, look for an alert in your results which tells you 'This is an Opal only service'.
PrePay Only stops
Some bus stops are PrePay at certain times of the day.
For example, bus stops in the Sydney CBD are PrePay Only from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday for all State Transit and Forest Coachline services.
Use the Trip Planner to work out if your stop is PrePay Only. PrePay Only stops are marked in your trip plan results with the information icon.
