Twitter and Facebook alerts are moving

What is changing?

  • Previously, customers could set up and receive personalised notifications of major disruptions to Metro, Sydney and Intercity Trains, ferries or light rail via Twitter and/or Facebook Messenger.
  • Transport for NSW has decided to remove Twitter and Facebook Messenger travel alerts from 30 June 2022 due to low customer usage and alert set up limitations on those platforms.
  • We recommend that you set up travel alerts in the Opal Travel app which provides more customisable travel alerts and notifications.

Transport for NSW has decided to remove Twitter travel alerts from 30 June 2022 due to low customer usage and limitations of the alerts, including:

  • the inability to trigger alerts for specified days,
  • unavailability of alerts over weekends and overnight, and
  • no option to subscribe to bus alerts.

Transport’s Opal Travel app provides more customisable travel alerts and notifications.

Transport for NSW has decided to remove Facebook Messenger travel alerts from 30 June 2022 due to low customer usage and alert set up limitations, including the findability to subscribe to alerts (i.e. customers need to perform a trip plan to engage the option to subscribe to alerts related to that trip).

Transport’s Opal Travel app provides more customisable travel alerts and notifications.

Travel alerts on Twitter and Facebook Messenger will no longer be available after 30 June 2022.

If you have existing travel alerts set up with Twitter or Facebook Messenger, you will not receive any alerts after 30 June 2022.

Opal Travel is the only official Transport for NSW app, you can download the Opal Travel app for free and set up notifications using recent travel history or by planning a trip. Opal Travel app notifications can be customised to include specific days and times, and customers can choose to be notified before every trip or only if their trip is affected by a disruption.

Travel notifications in the Opal Travel app will let you know in advance if your regular service:

  • is running on time or delayed
  • is impacted by disruptions
  • has lift, access or upgrade changes
  • has service capacity.

For more information see the Opal Travel app.

Download Opal Travel on Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store.
