Important travel advice

The 24th Biennale of Sydney, titled Ten Thousand Suns, will be held across six iconic Sydney locations from 9 March to 10 June 2024 including the heritage-listed White Bay Power Station which opens its doors to the public for the first time in over a century. Other venues include Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA), Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney, UNSW Galleries and Artspace.

Exhibition entry to the Biennale of Sydney is free.  

The extensive programming also includes a selection of free to reserve and paid events. These include artist talks, workshops, live music and performances.  You can view the line up of programming and book your tickets here

Opening times 9 March - 10 June:

  • Monday: Closed
  • Tuesday: 11am - 6pm
  • Wednesday: 11am- 9pm
  • Thursday: 11am - 6pm
  • Friday: 11am - 6pm
  • Saturday: 11am - 6pm
  • Sunday: 11am - 6pm

Note: Friday 8 March opening night is a ticketed event from 7pm - 11pm.

Regular route buses 441 and 442 stop outside the venue on Robert St. A number of buses also stop along Victoria Rd in short walking distance. As well, special event buses will operate between QVB and White Bay Power station each day during the event.

The closest light rail stop to the venue is Rozelle Bay on the L1 Line. From there connect with buses leaving from The Crescent to get across to Victoria Rd to get within walking distance of White Bay Power Station.

Parking is limited in the area so if you must drive plan ahead. You can find real-time updates on traffic conditions at livetraffic.com.

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

Remember to top up your Opal card before you travel to avoid waiting in line at top-up machines. You can top up your card online or at an Opal retailer.

More ways to pay

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Tallawong Station and Chatswood Station.

Metro services start from the early morning running every 10 minutes until late. Change at Epping for trains to the city to connect with buses to Rozelle.

Please note that weekend trackwork is taking place with buses replacing all Metro services between Tallawong and Chatswood on the following dates:

  • Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May
  • Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May

The best station for connections to Rozelle is Town Hall. Connect with route 441 and 442 buses or route 443 event buses from QVB York St to Rozelle to get to White Bay Power Station.

Trackwork

Trackwork is taking place during the event on weeknights and weekends on various train lines which may affect how you travel to and from the event, plan ahead at using Trip Planner.

Trackwork is carried out on an ongoing basis to maintain the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Sydney Trains network. For the latest information, check trackwork and travel alerts or plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

Regular route buses

Plenty of route buses run regularly to Rozelle within walking distance of the venue. To supplement services, event buses will also run between QVB and White Bay Power Station.

Regular route buses 441 and 442 start from QVB, York St Stand B and drop off on Robert St opposite the venue. A number of other bus routes also stop along Victoria Rd in short walking distance of the venue.

Route 443 special event buses will operate between QVB York St and White Bay Power Station using the following stops:

  • QVB, York St, Stand B – Pick up 
  • White Bay Power Station (within the site) – Pick up and Drop off 
  • QVB, Market St, Stand F – Drop off 

Route 443 event bus operating times:

  • Weekdays Tue - Fri: Buses will run approximately every 10 to 15 minutes from 10.30am to 7pm, and on Wednesdays buses will run until 10pm.
  • Saturdays: Buses will run every 15 minutes from 10.30am to 6.30pm.
  • Sundays and all days of the Easter Long weekend: Buses will run every 15 minutes from 10.30am to 6.30pm.

Vintage buses

Every Saturday and Sunday during the Biennale, vintage buses will operate on the route 443 special event service between QVB (Stand B, York St) and White Bay Power Station.

Vintage buses will run every half hour from the QVB, starting at 10.20am, with the final round trip leaving at 7.50pm. See the full timetable at the Sydney Bus Museum website.

These buses are very popular, so if you plan to catch one please leave plenty of extra travel time as long queues are expected. You can also catch the regular route 443 buses leaving more frequently from the same stop at QVB.

The vintage Buses are free or you can provide an electronic donation.

Catch one of the many ferry services to Balmain East or Birchgrove where you can connect with route buses to get within walking distance of the site.

Route 441 buses run from Birchgrove wharf and route 442 buses run from Balmain East wharf, both buses drop off on Robert St opposite White Bay Power Station.

L1 Dulwich Hill Line

L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services run between Central Station (Grand Concourse) and Dulwich Hill via Darling Harbour and the Inner West. Services run regularly from 6am to 11pm daily, and until midnight on Friday. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

The closest stop to the venue is Rozelle Bay. From there, connect with buses leaving from The Crescent to get across to Victoria Road to get within walking distance of White Bay Power Station.

Please note that changes to walking routes around Rozelle Parklands are currently in place, check signage and allow extra walking time. 

L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines

L2 Randwick Line light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) and L3 Kingsford Line services run between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using Trip Planner.

From QVB change for a bus towards Rozelle. Alternatively change for L1 light rail services to Rozelle Bay to get within walking distance of White Bay Power Station. Please note changes to walking routes through Rozelle Parklands are in place, check signage.
