Important Event Information

Up to 100,000 people are expected to attend the 27th Ferragosto Italian Street Festival in Five Dock from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 18 August.

Attendees are encouraged to plan their trip and consider all the available travel options ahead of time as road closures will be in place and heavy traffic is expected.

Great North Road will be closed between Queens Road and Lyons Road from 3am to 11pm and detours will be in place. The best way to get to the festival is by public transport.

The closest train station to the festival is Burwood, where you can change for a regular route bus service towards Five Dock from either station. Buses will be using different routes and stops while road closures are in place.

To help you get around the closures on Great North Road, Canada Bay Council will operate a free shuttle bus approximately every 30 minutes from 9:30am–12pm, 1pm–3pm and 3:30pm–5pm, making stops on Harris Road, Lyons Road, Fairlight Street and Ingham Avenue. Please note due to weekend trackwork Inner West Line train services will be affected: Buses replace Inner West Line trains between Strathfield and Central. Express trains continue to run. T1 Western Line Penrith trains make extra stops at Flemington, Homebush and Burwood

Remember, you'll need to use an Opal card or contactless payment card/device when travelling on public transport to and from the event. Register your details online at Opal or via the Opal Travel app ahead of time.

If you’re driving, travel with your group and use nearby local parking. Free bicycle parking will also be available on Kings Road and Rodd Road, at the corner of Great North Road, for those riding to the event.

Traffic may be heavier than usual on roads approaching the festival and detours will be in place so allow extra travel time. You can find real-time updates on traffic conditions at livetraffic.com.

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

Remember to top up your Opal card before you travel to avoid waiting in line at top-up machines. You can top up your card online or at an Opal retailer.

More ways to pay

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Tallawong Station and Chatswood Station.

Metro services start from the early morning running every 10 minutes until late. Change at Epping to connect with trains towards Strathfield then Burwood.

The closest station to Five Dock is Burwood on the T1 Western Line and T9 Northern Line. From Burwood, change for a regular route bus service towards Five Dock.

Trackwork

Weekend trackwork is taking place on Sunday 18 August and may affect how you travel to and from the event. More details will be available soon. Plan ahead using the Trip Planner.

  • City Circle Line: Trains will not run on the City Circle Line, or between Central and Wynyard. For travel around the City use the metro, light rail or local buses. T4 Eastern Suburbs Line trains continue to run between Central and Bondi Junction 
  • T1 North Shore Line: Trains run to a changed timetable between Hornsby and Wynyard only. Trains will not run between Wynyard and Central, or on the City Circle. For travel around the City use the metro, light rail or local buses. T9 Northern Line trains run to a changed timetable between Berowra and Central, platforms 1-12, via Strathfield. 
  • T1 Western Line: Richmond trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern between Richmond and Leppington. Change at Parramatta for trains towards Central. 
  • T2 Inner West & Leppington Line: Buses replace Inner West Line trains between Strathfield and Central. Express trains continue to run. T1 Western Line Penrith trains make extra stops at Flemington, Homebush and Burwood. Trains run to a changed timetable between Leppington and Lidcombe via Regents Park, and between Leppington and Richmond.  Change at Lidcombe or Parramatta for trains to Central via Strathfield. T3 Bankstown Line trains run between Liverpool or Lidcombe and Sydenham only. 
  • T3 Bankstown Line: Trains run between Liverpool or Lidcombe and Sydenham, and between Leppington and Lidcombe via Regents Park, to a changed timetable. Some trains run earlier than the normal timetable. T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line trains run between Sydenham and Bondi Junction, making extra stops at St Peters and Erskineville. Change at Sydenham for T4 trains, or metro services to the City. 
  • T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line: Most Cronulla and some Waterfall trains make extra stops at St Peters and Erskineville. 
  • T5 Cumberland Line: Some trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern, with extra trains running between Leppington and Richmond. 
  • T8 Airport & South Line: Trains run to a changed timetable and stopping pattern. You may need to change trains to continue your journey. Revesby trains run between Revesby and Central only, via the Airport. Most Macarthur trains run between Macarthur and Sydenham only. Change at Revesby for trains to Airport stations and Sydenham for T4 trains towards Bondi Junction, or metro services to the City 
  • T9 Northern Line: Until 8am, trains run between Berowra and Central, platforms 1-12, to a reduced frequency, every 30 minutes. From 8am, trains run between Berowra or Hornsby and Central, platforms 1-12 only. 
  • South Coast Line: From 2:30am to 9:50am, buses replace trains between Bomaderry and Wollongong. You may need to change buses to continue your journey. Trains run between Port Kembla, Wollongong and Bondi Junction, some to a changed timetable. The 2:39am Kiama to Bondi Junction service will run up to 19 minutes earlier than the normal timetable from Kiama to Coniston, then run to the normal timetable from Wollongong to Bondi Junction.

Event Shuttle Bus

To help you get around the closures on Great North Road, Canada Bay Council will operate a free shuttle bus approximately every 30 minutes from 9:30am–12pm, 1pm–3pm and 3:30pm–5pm, making stops on Harris Road, Lyons Road, Fairlight Street and Ingham Avenue. Regular Bus Routes

A number of regular route services stop within walking distance of the festival on Great North Road:

  • Route 406 Hurlstone Park to Five Dock via Ashfield Station
  • Route 415 Campsie to Chiswick via Strathfield & Burwood Stations.
  • Route 437 City QVB to Five Dock via City West Link
  • Route 438 City Martin Place to Abbotsford
  • Route 491 Hurstville to Five Dock via Ashfield Station
  • Route 492 Rockdale to Drummoyne via Burwood Station
  • Route 502 Cabarita Wharf to Drummoyne
  • Route 530 Burwood Station to Chatswood via Victoria Road

Keep in mind buses will be using alternate stops and travelling around Great North Road between Queens Road and Lyons Road.

Bus Diversions

Buses will be using alternate bus stops and travelling around closures on Great North Road between Queens Road and Lyons Road. 

From 3am until 11pm the following bus routes will be affected:

  • Route 406 and 437: services in both directions will start and end their trips at Domremy College, First Ave.
  • Route 415: services will detour via Harris Rd and Lyons Rd West, missing stops on Garfield St and Great North Rd between Queens Rd and Lyons Rd.
  • Routes 438X and 438N: services will detour via Lyons Rd, Ingham Ave and Fairlight St, missing stops on Great North Rd and Ramsay Rd.
  • Route 491: services in both directions will start and end their trips at Domremy College, First Ave.
  • Route 492: services will detour via Fairlight St and Ingham Ave, missing stops on Great North Rd. Temporary stops will be used.
  • Route 502: services will continue along on Lyons Rd West and miss stops on Ramsay Rd and Garfield St.
  • Route 530: services will detour via Harris Rd and Lyons Rd West, missing stops on Garfield St and Great North Rd.

The closest wharf to the festival is Abbotsford on the F3 Parramatta River Line. From here, connect with a route 438 bus or walk approximately 2.5km to the festival.

Alternatively, catch one of the many ferry services to Circular Quay the catch a T2 Inner West & Leppington Line train to Croydon or Burwood and connect with a local bus service to the festival.

L1 Dulwich Hill Line

L1 Dulwich Hill line light rail services run every 15 minutes between Central Grand Concourse and Dulwich Hill from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

Change at Marion for a route 437 or 438 bus towards Five Dock.

L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines

L2 Randwick light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) and L3 Kingsford line services run between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Services run regularly from 5am to 1am, plan your trip using Trip Planner.

Change at Central for trains to Burwood to connect with a route bus towards Five Dock.

Please note that Train trackwork on the City Circle and T1 North Shore Line may affect how you travel. Trains do not run between Central and Wynyard, or on the City Circle Line. For travel around the City use the light rail between Central and Circular Quay, metro or local buses. Change at Wynyard for trains to T1 North Shore Line stations.

Traffic will be heavy on roads approaching Five Dock including Parramatta Road, Queens Road, Ramsay Road, Lyons Road and Barnstaple Road as large crowds travel to and from the festival

Great North Road will be closed between Queens Road and Lyons Road from 3am until 11pm. Sections of surrounding streets will also be closed during this time, including Murralong Avenue.

Motorists will be detoured via Lyons Road, Ingham Avenue, Fairlight Street, Queens Road and Harris Road.

  • Barnstaple Road between Great North Road and Jersey Lane    
  • Cross Street between Garfield Street and Queens Road (southbound)
  • First Avenue between Waterview Street and Great North Road
  • Garfield Street* between Coles carpark exit and Great North Road
  • Garfield Street between Great North Road and the Coles carpark exit
  • Great North Road between Queens Road and Lyons Road
  • Henry Street between East Street and Great North Road
  • Jersey Lane between Lyons Road and Service Lane      
  • Kings Road between Harris Road and Thompson Lane (eastbound)
  • Kings Road between Thompson Lane and Great North Road
  • Murralong Avenue* between Great North Road and Ramsay Road
  • Ramsay Road between Smith Lane and Great North Road
  • Ramsay Road* between Fairlight Street and Smith Lane (westbound)
  • Rodd Road between Jersey Lane and Great North Road
  • Second Avenue between Great North Road and Waterview Street
  • Thompson Lane*^ between Garfield Street and Kings Road
  • Wangal Place* off Great North Road

^ Thompson Lane will be one-way northbound between Kings Road and Garfield Street for resident access only.

The Kings Road and Waterview Street carparks will also be closed to the public from 3am until 11pm on Sunday, 18 August 2024. Some limited car and bike parking will be available in the area, managed by council on the day. Visit canadabay.nsw.gov.au for more details.

There is no designated vehicle pick-up and drop-off area for the event. Taxis, ride-share vehicles and general motorists are advised that traffic will be heavy, and detours will be in place around the closures on Great North Road. Pick-ups and drop-offs should be organised outside of the closure footprint to avoid traffic delays.

Parking

Kings Road and Waterview Street carparks will be closed to the public from 3am until 11pm on Sunday 18 August 2024. Limited spaces will be available to TfNSW Mobility Parking Scheme Permit Holders.

Local street parking and other car parks are limited in the area with road closures and special event clearways in place. Large crowds are expected and roads in the area will be busy so consider catching public transport. If you have to drive, visit Canada Bay Council Parking for car park options.

Special Event Clearways

Special event clearway parking restrictions will be in effect on both sides of Great North Road between Queens Road and Lyons Road, as well as on surrounding streets, from 2am until 11pm.

Clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicle types and apply even to local residents and TfNSW Mobility Scheme Permit holders. Check signs carefully as vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. If your vehicle is towed, you can search your vehicle registration at the Find My Car website to find its new location, or alternatively call 132 701 to speak to an operator.
