Important Travel Advice

10,000 participants are expected to take part in the Sun Run event from Dee Why to Manly Beach. Participants are encouraged to plan their trip and consider all the available travel options ahead of time.

Getting there:

  • Special event shuttle buses will run from Wynyard, Balgowlah, Manly and Warringah Mall to help participants get to and from the event. Travel on event shuttle buses is free for Sun Run participants, just show your bib when boarding. For more info visit the event website.
  • Regular route buses also make stops along Pittwater Road in Dee Why, or near the beach where the start line is a short walk away. Please note, some buses will be diverting and missing stops while roads are closed for the event. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.
  • You'll need to use an Opal card or contactless payment card/device when travelling on public transport to and from the event. Register your details online at Opal or via the Opal Travel app ahead of time. If you're catching event shuttle buses, travel is included in your participant entry.

Road closures and special event clearways will be in place along the course from 3am with all closures in place in Dee Why, North Curl Curl, Curl Curl, Freshwater, Queenscliff and Manly by 5:30am. All roads will reopen by 11am.

If you’re driving to the start line, plan to arrive early as local parking in the area will be in high demand. Traffic may be heavier than usual in the area as detours are put in place when roads close ahead of the event. Allow extra travel time – you can find real-time updates on traffic conditions at livetraffic.com.

Opal

You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail.

Remember to top up your Opal card before you travel to avoid waiting in line at top-up machines. You can top up your card online or at an Opal retailer.

More ways to pay

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport services including metro, trains, buses ferries and light rail, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Sydney’s north-west and south-west via the city.   

The M1 Line operates turn up-and-go Metro services between Tallawong, Chatswood and Sydenham from early morning until late. 

Change at Chatswood or Victoria Cross for connecting buses to the Northern Beaches.

The best stations for connections to Dee Why are Chatswood, North Sydney and Wynyard. Change for a Sydney Buses or B-Line service to Dee Why to get to the start line.

Special event buses and frequent B-Line services also run from Carrington Street at Wynyard.

Trackwork

Weekend trackwork is taking place on Saturday 31 January on the following lines and may affect how you travel to and from the event. Plan ahead using the Trip Planner.

Trackwork is carried out on an ongoing basis to maintain the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the Sydney Trains network. For train service disruption information, check trackwork and travel alerts or plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

Regular Route Buses

The closest bus stops to the start line are along Pittwater Road at Dee Why shops. From here, Dee Why Beach is approximately 15-minutes (1km) walk away. A number of regular bus routes, including B-Line services, make stops along Pittwater Road. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

Bus Diversions

Some buses will be diverting and missing stops from 3:30am to 10am due to road closures for the event:

  • Route 166 – services will start and end trips at Manly Wharf, West Esplanade, Stand A. Services in both directions will divert away from Griffin Road via Pittwater Road, Harbord Road and Brighton Street. Services will also divert away from North Steyne in both directions via Oliver Street and Pittwater Road.
  • Route 167 – services will start and end trips at Jacka Park, Wyndora Avenue.
  • Route 177 – services in both directions will divert away from Pitt Road and Abbott Road via Headland Road and Harbord Road. Stops on Parr Avenue, Playfair Road, Abbott Road and Pitt Road will be missed.

Special Event Buses

Free special event shuttle bus services will run from Wynyard via Warringah Mall, Balgowlah and Manly, making limited stops to help get participants to the start line in Dee Why and again after the event on the same routes, home from Manly.

Special event buses are free for Sun Run participants – simply show your race bib prior to boarding.

Getting There

Manly to Dee Why – Route 1SR: Buses will leave Manly Wharf Stand E (Gilbert Park) every 5-10 minutes from 5:20am to 6:50am stopping at Warringah Mall, Pittwater Rd, Stand D then Dee Why, Pittwater Rd

Wynyard to Dee Why – Route 2SR: Buses will leave Wynyard Station from Carrington St, Stand B at 5:10am, 5:20am, 5.30am and 5:40am. You can also catch regular B-Line buses to Dee Why running every 15 minutes from 5.25am leaving from the same stop.

Route 2SR will make stops at:

  • Neutral Bay (Big Bear Shopping Centre), Military Rd opp Watson St
  • Neutral Bay Junction, Military Rd
  • Spit Junction, Spit Rd
  • Balgowlah Shops – Sydney Rd near Condamine St - additional route 2SR buses will also leave Balgowlah Shops at 6.05am and 6.15am.
  • Manly Vale, Kenneth Rd
  • Warringah Mall, Pittwater Rd, Stand D
  • Dee Why, Pittwater Rd

Getting Home

Manly to Dee Why – Route 1SR: buses back towards Dee Why will leave Manly Wharf Stand E (Gilbert Park) every 5-10 minutes from 7:30am to 10:30am, stopping at Warringah Mall then Dee Why.

To Wynyard – catch Route 1SR buses to Warringah Mall to connect with frequent B-Line buses to Wynyard.

The closest ferry wharf to the event is Manly Wharf on the F1 Line. From there, you can connect with a regular bus service or a special event bus to get to the start line at Dee Why.

Keep in mind ferry services are very popular and may reach capacity, especially on weekends.

Please note, the first ferry service will arrive at Manly Wharf at 6:32am. Plan ahead using the Trip Planner to make sure you get to the start line in time.

L1 Dulwich Hill Line

L1 Dulwich Hill Line light rail services run between Central Station (Grand Concourse) and Dulwich Hill via Darling Harbour and the Inner West. Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.

From Central change for L2 or L3 light rail services or trains to Wynyard to connect with buses to the Northern Beaches.

L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford Lines

L2 Randwick light rail services run between Circular Quay and Randwick via Central Station (Chalmers Street) and L3 Kingsford line services run between Circular Quay and Juniors Kingsford via Central Station (Chalmers Street). Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily, plan your trip using Trip Planner.

Change at Wynyard for buses to the Northern Beaches, including B-Line services leaving from Carrington Street.

L4 Westmead and Carlingford Line  

L4 Westmead and Carlingford Line light rail services run between Carlingford and Westmead via Parramatta CBD. Services run regularly from 5am to 1am daily. Plan your trip using the Trip Planner.  

Alight at Parramatta Square or Westmead to connect with trains to Wynyard, then B-Line bus services from Carrington Street to the Northern Beaches.

Road Closures

Closures will be in place in the following locations along and surrounding the course between 3:30am and 11am.

Dee Why  

  • From 3:30am to 9am: sections of Howard Avenue, The Strand and Dee Why Parade will be closed. (Local access to Dee Why Beach Car Park maintained until full). 
  • From 5:15am to 9am: sections of Oaks Avenue and The Strand will be closed. (Local access will be maintained on Oaks Avenue until 6:15am) 
  • From 5:30am to 9am: sections of Boronia Street, Griffin Road, Monash Parade, Pacific Parade and The Strand will be closed. (Local access will be maintained on Pacific Parade until 6:15am. No access to Griffin Road from The Strand Lane.) 

North Curl Curl  

  • From 5:30am to 9am: sections of Abbot Road, Blackwood Road, Burilla Avenue, Delaigh Avenue, Griffin Road, Pitt Road, Adams Street, Carrington Parade, Charles Street, Evans Street, and surrounding local roads will be closed. The following crossover points will be maintained (southbound):  
    • Delaigh Avenue between Parr Avenue and Pitt Road  
    • Fairport Street between Makim Street and Pitt Road  
    • Fay Street between Makim Street and Abbott Road  
    • North Road between Bellevue Parade and Pitt Road  
    • Parr Avenue between Headland Road and Reid Avenue  
    • Playfield Road between Parr Avenue and Pitt Road  
  • The following crossover points will be maintained until 6:15am: 
    • Headland Road between Wheeler Parade and Griffin Road (eastbound) 
    • Playfair Road between Pitt Road and Abbott Road 
    • Ross Street between Pitt Road and Grainger Avenue 

Curl Curl 

  • From 5:30am to 9am: sections of Adams Street, Beach Street, Carrington Parade, Ellen Street, Gardere Avenue and Griffin Road will be closed.  

Freshwater 

  • From 5:00am to 9am: sections of Evans Street and Ocean View Road will be closed 
  • From 5:30am to 9am: sections of Charles Street, Evans Street, Gore Street, Kooloora Street, Moore Road and Ocean View Road will be closed. (Local access maintained to Charles Street westbound between Kooloora Avenue and Moore Road. No vehicular access to roads between the course and the coast between 5:30am and 9am). 
  • From 5:30am to 10am: sections of Evans Street, Lumsdaine Drive and Undercliff Road will be closed 

Queenscliff 

  • From 5:30am to 10am: sections of Bridge Road, Cavill Street, Crown Road, Dalley Street, Dowling Street, Greycliffe Street and Queenscliff Road will be closed. (Managed vehicle crossover point westbound until 6:30am and from 9:15am). 

Manly  

  • From 3:30am to 9:30am: sections of Denison Street, North Steyne and Raglan Street will be closed (Managed residential access on Denison Street).  
  • From 3:30am to 11am: sections of Ashburner Street, North Steyne, Rialto Lane, South Steyne, Victoria Parade and Wentworth Street will be closed (Managed residential access at Ashburner Street, Rialto Lane and South Steyne. No Parking on South Steyne). 
  • From 5:30am to 10am: sections of Cameron Avenue, Collingwood Street and North Steyne will be closed (Managed residential access at Collingwood Street). 

Residents are advised that vehicles are not permitted on roads once they are closed. Travel before roads close or after they have re-opened.

Cycleway Closure – Dee Why from 3:30am to 9am

  • Both directions closed on The Strand between Oaks Avenue and Dee Why Parade.

Crossover Point – Closure Times

Vehicle crossover points have been established to facilitate resident access where possible. To ensure the safety of participants, these points will be closed to vehicles while runners pass through. Crossover points will be managed by Police and traffic controllers.

Temporary Taxi and rideshares drop off zones will be implemented near the start line on Howard Avenue at Clyde Road and Howard Avenue at Avon Road. Designated signage will be installed at these locations.  

Permanent rideshare drops in Manly will not be affected by the road closures.

Parking

There's limited street parking around Dee Why and Manly, and spots will fill quickly. Plan to arrive early and allow extra travel time as traffic may be heavy on roads around Dee Why Beach as participants travel to the start line. 

Roads around Dee Why Beach will be closed from 3.30am. Access to Dee Why Beach car park will be maintained until it reaches capacity.

Special Event Clearways

Special event clearway parking restrictions will be in effect from 3am until 9am on roads along the course through Dee Why, North Curl Curl, Freshwater, Queenscliff and Manly including sections of Abbott Road, Howard Avenue, The Strand, Evans Street, Crown Road and North Steyne.

Clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicle types and apply even to local residents and TfNSW Mobility Scheme Permit holders. Check signs carefully as vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies. If your vehicle is towed, you can search your vehicle registration at the Find My Car website to find its new location, or alternatively call 132 701 to speak to an operator.
