You can use an Opal card for all modes of public transport in Sydney and surrounding regions, including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail. Receive Opal benefits including daily and weekly fare caps and a Travel Cap of $2.80 on Sundays. 

Remember to top up your Opal card before you travel to avoid waiting in line at top-up machines. You can top up your card online or at an Opal retailer.

More ways to pay

If you have a contactless-enabled American Express, Mastercard or Visa debit or credit card, or a linked device, you can use it to pay for your travel by tapping on and tapping off at Opal card readers. Available on all public transport services including metro, trains, buses ferries and light rail, contactless payments are another way to pay on the Opal network. Adult Opal fare pricing applies and you will receive Opal benefits, including daily and weekly fare caps.

Summer Holiday timetable

During the summer holidays including Christmas and New Year, transport services including metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail will run to a changed timetable. Some services will run to weekend timetables on weekdays and other services, including those to major events, beaches and shopping centres, will run more frequently. Sydney Metro services are high-frequency, driverless trains running between Tallawong Station and Chatswood Station.

Metro services start from the early morning and run every 10 minutes until late. Change at Central to connect with trains towards Bulli.

The closest station to the Illawarra Music festival is Bulli on the South Coast Line which is a short walk from the Showgrounds. A free shuttle bus will run between the station and showgrounds from 8am to 10am and from 5pm to 7pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. See the Festival Site Map for stop locations.

On Saturday and Sunday trains from Sydney and from Kiama will make an additional stop at Bulli:

  • From Sydney:  trains from Bondi Junction and Central towards Kiama will make an additional stop at Bulli.
  • From Kiama/Dapto: trains from Kiama and Dapto towards Central will make an additional stop at Bulli.

Special event trains:

“Green Music Train” themed services will also run to Bulli Station starting from Bondi Junction. Two services will leave each morning on Saturday and Sunday at 8:13am and 9:09am making limited stops down to Bulli. Trackwork is taking place from 02:00 Saturday 18 until 02:00 Monday 20 January which may affect how you travel to and from the event:

  • T1 Western Line: Buses replace trains between St Marys, Richmond and Granville. On Sunday from 4.30pm, trains run between Parramatta and the City. 
  • T5 Cumberland Line: Buses replace trains between Richmond and Granville.
  • T8 Airport & South Line: Nightly from 22:00 until 02:00 buses replace trains between Glenfield and East Hills 
  • Blue Mountains Line: Buses replace trains between Penrith and Central. 
  • Central Coast & Newcastle Line: Most trains start and end at North Sydney.

Local bus services operate through the Illawarra region including Dions Buses from Wollongong CBD to Austinmere and Premier Charters that service Wollongong, Stanwell Park, Thirroul, Coledale and Corrimal.

Scheduled routes service the Wollongong, North Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Towradgi, Corrimal, Russell Vale, Woonona, East Woonona, Bulli, Bulli Beach, Thirroul and Austinmer. Service times and stopping patterns can be found in the route timetables.

There will be a free shuttle between the festival and Bulli train station in the hours 8am to 10 am and between 5pm and 7pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Traffic is expected to be heavier than normal on roads approaching Bulli on Thursday and over the weekend during the event. Motorists should allow for extra travel time when driving through the area.
