Changes to M92 Parramatta to Sutherland bus route

From Sunday 24 September, route M92 Parramatta to Sutherland will be split into two new routes:

  • 920 Parramatta-Bankstown
  • 960 Bankstown-Sutherland

Passengers travelling the full length of the route (Parramatta to Sutherland), will need to change buses at Bankstown.

  • 920 services depart from Bankstown Station Stand E
  • 960 services depart from Bankstown Station Stand B

All other stops remain the same.

This change will improve journey time and reliability for passengers and will allow drivers to complete other routes impacted by driver shortages.

Route 915, which was introduced to deliver a loop service from Lidcombe Station to the former Sydney University Cumberland campus, has been discontinued. Current passengers are encouraged to use new 920 service instead.

Plan your trip with Trip Planner or transport apps before you travel.

M92 route split FAQs

The M92 operates from Sutherland to Parramatta and currently takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. The length of the route contributes to delays for passengers and requires more drivers, of which there is a critical shortage across Greater Sydney.

From 24 September 2023, the M92 will be operated as two new routes: The 920 (Parramatta-Bankstown) and the 960 (Bankstown-Sutherland).

This change is expected to improve punctuality of services and free up bus drivers to support other routes impacted by driver shortages.

The new services will operate every 15 minutes during weekdays, which is an improvement over the current service delivery, giving passengers more reliable travel options.

New later evening services are also being introduced.

Passengers who used the previous M92 service can transfer at Bankstown between the 960 and 920 services.

From 24 September 2023, the M92 bus service will be split into two new services – the 920 between Bankstown and Parramatta (operated by Transit Systems) and the 960 between Sutherland and Bankstown (operated by U-Go Mobility).

Passengers who would like to view the new route timetables can do so at the below links:

The current service frequency of the M92 ranges between 10 to 20 minutes in the weekday peaks and 15 to 30 minutes in the weekday off peak. On weekends, the M92 is currently timetabled to operate around every 20 minutes.

Due to recent driver shortages and operational challenges from the lengthy route, the M92 experienced many service delays and cancellations.

The new 920 and 960 will deliver a service around every 15 minutes during the day on weekdays, around every 20 minutes during the day on the weekend and around every 30 minutes in the evenings all week.

The new service routes will provide bus passengers greater predictability and reliability.

Passengers will also benefit from extended operating hours with the new 920 and 960, with evening services extended to between 1 and 3 hours later than the current M92 timetable.

Last buses will now depart after:

  • 10.30pm on weekdays
  • 10pm on Saturdays
  • 8.45pm on Sundays

Passengers who need to interchange between the new 920 and 960 services can do so at either Bankstown Central shopping centre or Bankstown Station.

Passengers are recommended to interchange at Bankstown Station as the bus stops for the two routes are located side by side allowing for easier connections.

The new 920 and 960 buses which replace the M92 service from 24 September 2024 will extend evening services to between 1 and 3 hours later than the current M92 timetable.
Last buses will now depart after:

  • 10.30pm on weekdays
  • 10pm on Saturdays
  • 8.45pm on Sundays

These are frequent services that depart approximately every 15 minutes. While there is not a guarantee of immediate connections between the 920 and 960 services on every occasion, if a passenger misses a connecting service, the maximum wait may be 15 minutes during the day on weekdays for the next service to arrive. On weekends this may be 20 minutes during the day and 30 minutes during evenings. Typically, the wait time should be less.

The two bus routes have also been timetabled to align with train arrival and departure times at train stations along the route to allow for ease of ongoing intermodal travel.

Transport for NSW is working with both bus operators to deliver a service that is smooth and reliable, with swift transfers for passengers at Bankstown.

The distance between the stops for the 960 and 920 at Bankstown Station is approximately 30 meters.

The 915 was introduced to deliver a loop service from Lidcombe Station to the former Sydney University Cumberland campus. It replicates part of the M92 route to provide additional capacity for university students.

In February 2021, Sydney University’s Health Sciences, which had operated from the Cumberland campus, was moved to Camperdown.

With little activity now taking place at the Cumberland campus and low demand for this service, which currently averages two people per trip, the 915 service is no longer required. Passengers will be able to use the new 920 service instead.

When considering new route numbers, thought is given to:

  • maintaining consistent route numbering within a geographic area;
  • aligning route numbers with other routes in the same area;
  • where possible, echoing the route number to be replaced; and
  • giving significant routes an easy number to remember, typically ending in 0.

Both the 920 and 960 apply the above logic. The 920 is a derivation of the M92 and is within the same range of route numbers as other routes in the area. The 960 relates to several other routes that overlap it in part; 961, 962 and 963.

Given both new routes are some of the most frequent and primary routes in their areas, they have been given a number ending in 0.
