Starting 13 October 2025, the state-of-the-art Mariyung intercity trains will begin servicing the Blue Mountains Line, bringing modern comfort, enhanced accessibility and a connection to culture for commuters and travellers alike.
A new era for mountain travel
The Mariyung (the Darug word for emu) is designed to deliver a new way to train, with upgraded amenities, modern safety features and inclusive design. On the Blue Mountains route, passengers will enjoy:
- More comfort — spacious 2×2 seating, tray tables, high backs, charging ports for devices
- Ease of use — dedicated pram, luggage and bicycle space
- Accessibility for all — improved wheelchair access, accessible toilets and inclusive design throughout
- Safety and reliability — modern CCTV systems, emergency help points and doors that sense with it’s clear to close
- Cultural connection — artwork by Darug artist Leanne Mulgo Watson, and naming in recognition of Aboriginal language and Country
These benefits build on work already begun on other intercity lines, with Mariyung replacing older fleets and enabling more consistent, comfortable journeys.
During the transition, commuters may see a mix of older and new fleets over the coming months.
